  • Peaceful setting in the Marais Poitevin
  • Under 45 minutes' drive from La Rochelle
  • Pool, playground, fishing and restaurant
Prepare your paddling arm: Camping l'Île Cariot is in the Marais Poitevin, the second biggest wetland in western France: here you can/certainly should take a canoe out, or a kayak, or perhaps just relinquish the paddle and allow yourself to drift dreamily down its waters on a guided flat-bottomed boat… Camping l'Île Cariot is a friendly and easy-going site, in a peaceful place about 20 kilometres from the beaches and watersports of the Atlantic coast, and 40 minutes' drive from the smashing port city of La Rochelle. Countryside and coast activities like fishing, hiking, riverside cycling and birdwatching are all around in the surrounding area. Among the many facilities on site are a heated pool with a shallow pool for kids (open from June to September), a food shop, a playground, a pétanque court, a TV room and a restaurant. Fishing is also available on site. The site also has shower and toilet blocks, disabled facilities and a launderette.

What customers say

This small, friendly campground has spotless facilities & a well-kept heated pool. Shady, neat pitches. Staff are praised for being helpful & welcoming. Expect quiet days, some evening entertainment (noise until 10 pm noted). Nearby bakery/supermarket. La Rochelle close by. Some found Wi-Fi weak, pool small/lacked shade, or experienced external noise. A few pitches had ground issues after rain.

From the manager: Bonjour

Liked The site is small and friendly. The owners are such a pleasure, always available and made everyone feel welcome. The shared facilities are kept very clean throughout the day and topped up with soap & toilet paper.

The pool was a highlight: heated and clean. There are several recliners and parasols. We often had the pool to ourselves or with one or two others if we timed it right.

The grass pitch was shady and the trees maintained well to avoid overhang causing tent damage. We pitched very close to the facilities which was convenient. There is evening entertainment, but as it’s a small site it doesn’t get rowdy - but just worth noting there is a little noise up to 10pm if you are seeking a 24/7 peaceful retreat. During the day the site is very quiet, I finished many novels!

There is a bakery (and small supermarket) a short walk away, perfect for pastries for breakfast and fresh bread. Larger supermarkets are a short drive and La Rochelle is an easy 30-40 minute drive. There are some beautiful parks and villages to visit closer to the site, the location is ideal for unwinding.

We would definitely recommend this site.

Liked This is a very well run site with immaculate toilets and showers and a lovely clean municipal pool. Although a fairly small site they had regular entertainment such as bingo and karaoke. They have a bar, serving food in the evenings and a snack bar open at lunchtimes. The staff were lovely and very helpful. The pitches were nice and shady. The site is walking distance to the village with convenience store and bakery. It's a great place to stay for a peaceful holiday

Liked Nice big pitch, convenient pool with no extra charge, friendly campers and team. Great library of books and games. Loo roll, loo seats and soap - rare on a French campsite!

Disliked Our pitch wasn’t grassy, though it was a very hot time and I’m sure others had been on and off wearing the grass down

Local attractions

Whether your tastes are ticked by a peaceful stroll along country lanes, a whirl around lively La Rochelle, gently stalking local wildlife or basking on the beaches of the southern Vendée, Camping l'Île Cariot is well placed for weeks' worth of active and chilled out days. The famed old abbey buildings of Maillezais, Nieul sur l’Autise and Saint Michel en l’Herm are also within easy reach. Boats of all sorts should be investigated around here too, first up with a canal trip along the rivers of the Marais Poitevin, then with a lazy afternoon being rowed around the Venise Verte, the marshland crisscrossed with teeny canals. Or take the binoculars to the wetlands of La Baie de l’Aiguillon Natural Park, home and migratory stopoff to thousands of wading birds and waterfowl. Just along the coast, have city days out at Fontenay le Comte and La Rochelle.
