  • Quiet farm site halfway between Laval and Fougères
  • Home to farm animals and parakeets
  • A five-minute drive from shops and supermarkets in Ernée
Camping La Cascade is a top place to stop off at or use as a base for sightseeing days: it's halfway between Laval and Brittany's Fougères, just under an hour from Rennes and an hour and a half from Saint-Malo. This quiet and pretty farm site also has animals like cows and parakeets, as well as a farmyard with chickens, roosters, geese and turkeys. Pitches are mixed gravel and grass, on a spacious and flowery site. It's quiet at night too. The farm has showers, toilets, charging facilities and chemical disposal. If you should want to head away from this welcoming spot for a while, the Mayenne department town of Ernée is a five-minute drive away with shops and supermarkets and super opps for walking by the river.

Local attractions

For indoor days, Ernée has a popular aquatic centre, where the kids can splash and slide, and adults can swim or steam in the sauna. There's also a motocross track offering muddy thrills for petrolheads. Cheese enthusiasts have a treat in store at Laval (35 minutes' drive), home of the Lactopôle cheese museum. Learn more than you ever thought possible about the history and the science behind France's famous diary products, craft your own Camembert in a workshop and – best of all – eat cheese. Laval has a splendid science museum as well, and a 12th-century château slap-bang in the town centre. It's a fine place to take a boat cruise down the Mayenne, most particularly a sunset one with dinner (and presumably cheese) included. In terms of culture and history and river views, Laval has a number of rivals in the region. Fougères (25 minutes), Mayenne (30 minutes), Jublains (40 minutes) and Evron (55 minutes) provide a tempting spread of Roman ruins, medieval castles and quirky museums, all in pleasant surrounds. Saulges (50 minutes) has an eighth-century church and something much older hidden away by the riverside. Fine walking trails take you through the mini-canyon and towards a network of caves that were occupied and decorated in prehistoric times.
