  • Well-appointed holiday park in the grounds of a French manor
  • Handy for Calais, Grand Site des Deux-Caps, theme parks and waterparks
  • Two playgrounds, nine-hole miniature golf course and volleyball
If ever you’ve fallen foul of a traffic jam or a delayed ferry or Eurotunnel train on your way through to Calais, you’ll know that an untimely site arrival can leave you somewhat scuppered. But not with Château de la Bien-Assise, a highly handy 20-minute drive from Calais. For its 24-hour barriers and flexible arrival times for booked guests mean that even if you rock up at this Guines site in the middle of the night, you’ll have a pitch to park up at, no probs. And while this Pas-de-Calais place may well be splendid for a stopover between England and France and wider Europe, it’s also excellently set up as a family holiday destination, with well-appointed facilities and a setting among the Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park, a land filled with all sorts to see and do. If you arrive during daylight hours, head for a dip in the heated pool with retractable roof first, followed by a sun-drenched doze on the adjacent sun terrace if you've had a long journey here (or indeed if not). For times of higher energy, a nine-hole miniature golf course and three outdoor ping pong tables await (bats and balls can be bought at the shop), tennis courts are available for an extra charge, and a volleyball court and outdoor gym are to hand should you be feeling particularly croissant conscious. The park has two playgrounds – one for kids aged eight to 12, and another for smaller people aged three to seven. A bar, pool table, pinball machine and several arcade games are indoors.

Liked: Only a few miles from Calais. An excellent stop off before a long drive to your holiday destination in France. Friendly welcoming staff. Good bar and spotless facilities. We also used this site on our way back and reception had closed but not a problem the manager left a note on the reception door to choose a pitch. And they would see me tomorrow. We were only there one night so had prepaid. Chose our pitch near reception and left early for our return ferry to the UK. Although we were only there one night on the way to our holiday destination and one night on our way back I could easily have stayed a few more days. Turn right out of site and a couple of miles is a carfor and a Lidl and 24hr fuel. As you can’t take anything to France this was a welcome bonus.

Disliked: All good.

Liked: Clean facilities, large pitches and handy for Calais and quick getaway.

Disliked: Charged 5 euro for the wifi code which subsequently appeared only to work on one device. Paying for wifi in this day and age is a con. They have an option whereby if you buy a drink in the bar you get the code for free but guess what - the bar was shut despite their site advertising that it would be open until the end of Sept. Snack bar also shut. What was open was their restaurant which was pricey and avoided. The shop was also open and prices were extortionate - 0ver 10 euro for bottle of french wine (La Vielle Ferme) which is £7 in Tesco here in the UK. I didn't see any in the local Carrefour but the equivalent wine there is just over 2 Euro. Captive customers abused as ever.

Liked: We liked the friendly staff. Large well kept pitches. Clean toilet block with good showers. The whole site is very well maintained. Lovely little cone shaped bushes. The restaurant is very good, the food is excellent and the staff are friendly and speak good English. The swimming pool looks lovely, haven't had time to swim in it yet. The chateau and grounds are really nice. We've used this site twice now on our way to south of France.

Liked: A well laid out site with plenty of greenery and green space. A good level pitch with easy enough EHU. Plentiful and clean facilities, separate male and female. Very friendly check-in and accompanied to pitch which is a nice touch. Nice bar and terrace area. Good food in the restaurant. Good location for last night before ferry and felt secure.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: Close to Calais port and Tunnel so great for early departure to UK or late arrival from UK. Good size pitches, all on grass and the whole site is well-kept. The sanitary facilities are clean and ample. It offers a swimming pool and a cafe/snack-bar. Adjacent to and accessible from the site is a Logis de France hotel with an excellent restaurant available to site users (closed on Mondays).

Local attractions

Its setting between sea and the countryside is the big advantage of this site: the beach resorts of Wimereux and Wissant are both within half an hour’s drive, as is one of Europe’s largest aquariums at Boulogne-sur-Mer. If you’re one for setting yourself up for smashing vistas, then the Grand Site des Deux-Caps – a most spectacular protected coastal area comprising the Cap Blanc-Nez and Cap Gris-Nez and looking right out towards Dover’s white cliffs – is a short drive away. When kid-friendly day trips are calling, head to the family theme parks of Bagatelle or Dennlys for waterslide swooshing and miniature railway or monorail rides, or to the coastal waterpark of Aqualud for more than two kilometres of slides, tropical pools and wave machines, all easily within an hour’s drive.
