  • Peaceful Nord-Pas-de-Calais site five minutes' drive from Camiers
  • Le Touquet, Parc Bagatelle and Nausicaá within a half-hour drive
  • Restaurant and summer food truck on site; sandy beach 15 minutes' walk
How's this for a setting for a seaside break in Nord-Pas-de-Calais? Camping Cristal d’Opale is tucked away among the dunes at the southern corner of the Caps et Marais d’Opale Regional Natural Park, about five minutes' drive from Camiers, and it’s a lovely spot for a relaxed break close to the coast. What you want from a seaside holiday is, of course, a beach not too far away – and this site certainly delivers on that front, as the extensive sands of Plage Sainte-Cécile are about 15 minutes’ walk away. This location, just a little way back from the shoreline (with no sea views), means that pitches are nicely sheltered from coastal breezes; it also puts you within easy walking distance of a couple of restaurants near the beach (and there are a couple more in Camiers, along with a supermarket for picnic supplies). As well as being able to walk to the local beach easily enough, you’ll also be well placed for other destinations along the coast, including Le Touquet and Boulogne-sur-Mer (both within 25 minutes’ drive) and the various forest areas around the natural park. So that’s a pretty resounding thumbs-up for the setting, but what about the place itself? Well, this is one of those sites that’s focused on peaceful times rather than being packed with lots of noisy activities and facilities. That said, you will have access to a play area for energetic kids, and there’s occasional low-key entertainment on site. A launderette, a wifi service and modern bathrooms (with wheelchair access and baby facilities) are also on site, and there’s a bar-restaurant along with a food truck for more eating options in summer. While there isn't a chemical waste disposal point on site, the site can point you towards a partner campsite, 10 minutes' drive away, with such facilities.

Power optional grass and sand campsite

Cordialement

Power optional grass and sand campsite

Liked Nearby beach is nice, electric was reliable.

Disliked Site is in quite a state, pitches are random, many are very deep sand so no good for campers / motorhomes or caravans. We found 2 big pieces of metal with rusty nails sticking out in the sand on our pitch, good job the van didn't get a flat tyre, or worse we stepped on them! Cigarette ends all over the pitch too, and in a general state. Toilets blocks were certainly not modern as described in the information, and although clean enough most of the time, they clearly had some drainage issues as the floor was often half flooded, and they smelt quite nasty at times. You have to pay for showers and the shower I used barely worked and literally dribbled water. Abandoned caravans littered across the site, and even some newer static type homes seemingly dumped on the side of some pitches. We were later told they are apparently renovating the site after a period of being abandoned, but its got a long long way to go and I saw very little evidence of much being renovated in the camping areas or toilet blocks. They are obviously spending some money on new static vans but thats about all I could see. It has the potential to be a really nice site, but its certainly not ready to be accepting camping guests in my opinion, and still has an abandoned feel to it all.

Local attractions

Plage Sainte-Cécile (15 minutes’ walk) is likely to be the centre of attention, whether you choose to sit or stroll quietly, play in the sand or join one of the summer activities like beach volleyball or paddleboarding. Le Touquet (20 minutes’ drive) is a good option for a change of scenery, with classic architecture to see and beach bars along its stretch of soft sandy beach. For a bit more activity along the coast, book horse riding with one of the equestrian centres around Le Touquet, play golf at Golf d'Hardelot - Les Dunes (20 minutes) or get up into the trees at Opalaventure Park (five minutes). There are lots of lovely walks around too, perhaps in the Parc du Rohart nature reserve (five minutes) or the Dunes du Mont Saint-Frieux (10 minutes). Family days out? Try the rides and rollercoasters of Parc Bagatelle or check out the underwater world at Nausicaá Centre National De La Mer (both half an hour), Europe’s biggest aquarium.
