- On shores of Lac de Pareloup, with direct lake access and small beach
- A 35-minute drive from Rodez and 45 minutes from Millau
- Outdoor waterpark, watersports on lake, bar-restaurant and small shop
If your idea of top hols involves spending absolutely as much time as possible in, on or by water, you won’t go wrong with stays at Camping Le Caussanel, a family-friendly site in the Midi-Pyrénées, five minutes’ drive (about three kilometres) from the Aveyron village of Canet-de-Salars.
On the shores of the sprawling Lac de Pareloup, the site is well set-up for aquatic adventure. Guests who are open to fresh-water dips and trips can stroll along to the lake for swimming, sailing, windsurfing, rowing, kayaking and fishing (or set up for lazes on the small beach), while those tired out just thinking about all that can opt instead for days spent splashing about the outdoor pool, water playground and slides of the on-site waterpark.
There’s plenty to do in the dry too, as kids can be kept busy on the large playground or (during high season) with the kids’ club, and the whole family can take part in high-season sports tournaments, or pay visits to the multisports, tennis and pétanque courts.
Entertainment isn’t confined to daylight hours either – high season means a whole host of themed evenings, and guests can head to the bar-restaurant (in an old refurbished farm building) to sample local eats even during quieter periods. Prefer to go self-catering? Another refurbed farm building houses a small shop where guests can nab ingredients and essentials.

Local attractions
If you're up for a bit of time exploring urban centres, there’s lots round here to choose from. The small city of Rodez is a 35-minute drive from base, and a must-visit for its prehistory and art museums, as well as its restaurants, shops and clubs.
Spending hours out and about in nature is essentially a requirement hereabouts too, as the site is just 15 minutes’ drive from the Grands Causses Regional Natural Park, placing pilgrimages to stunning spots – such as the spectacular Tarn Gorge (40 minutes), the tallest bridge in the world (the Millau Viaduct, 35 minutes away) and the eminently photographable Chaos de Montpellier-le-Vieux (one hour and 10 minutes) – within relatively easy reach.
Much should also be made of the sheer numbers of pretty villages in Aveyron, with the lovely and scenic Belcastel, Brousse-le-Château, Estaing, Peyre, Saint-Côme d’Olt, Saint-Eulalie d’Olt and Sauveterre-de-Rouergue all within an hour. Make the trip in those directions for traditional stone buildings, winding streets and prime riverside locations.
For a more leisurely way of experiencing the area, head along to Vélo-Rail du Larzac, an hour away, to pedal along disused rail tracks through a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
