  • Family site with green surrounds in Ariège's Cathar country
  • Five minutes' drive from Camon village; 25 minutes from Lake Montbel
  • Trampolines, pétanque and other activities; on-site grocery shop
Off to Ariège? For Cathar castle country, water-based adventures, medieval villages and stunning scenery all around? How sensible of you. Be more sensible still and sort a stay at Camping La Pibola, a small and peaceful site where the focus is on family holidays in a scenic, green setting. Hills, rivers and waterfalls are all nearby for exploring by foot, bike, horseback or canoe, and the handsome expanse of Lac de Montbel is a 25-minute drive south. Spectacular Carcassonne, packed with historic sites, is also within an hour's drive of the site. (And you must also check out Camon village, a mere five minutes' drive away, for it's a splendid spot with restaurants.) Camping La Pibola is a family-run site, between Mirepoix and Montbel lake, on a wooded hill. There's a good range of family-friendly activities on site, including trampolines, ping pong, table football, a pétanque court, board games and electronic darts. Plus, during high season, entertainment and extra things are added into the mix: an outdoor swimming pool, an inflatable park for kids, an outdoor sports area, a kids' club and themed evenings and meals. A grocery shop sells local produce and other foodie bits, and bread and pastries are delivered daily. If you fancy grilling your dinner, head to the site's communal charcoal barbecues.

Local attractions

You should be happily entertained/occupied for weeks around here, whether you want to join in activities organised by the site or set off into the Ariège countryside under your own steam. Canoeing and kayaking can be had on the Hers river that flows at the foot of Camping La Pibola's hill; an equestrian centre is at nearby Léran (10 minutes' drive), and caving and canyoning are both close by: ask the Pibola team for info on all these, as well as on the many hikes close to the site. The team can also angle you in the right direction for local lake and river fishing, or, for truly heady types, set you up with a nearby paragliding company for dizzy adventures overhead. More outdoor days are at Lac de Montbel (25 minutes), a 1,500-acre reservoir that's a popular pick in the region for canoeing and sailing, or setting forth on the 16-kilometre hiking path around the lake's shores. The Ariégeoises Pyrenees Regional Natural Park is 40 minutes' drive away (access it via Vernajoul) for more hikes, or you could amble around the Roquefort waterfalls within half an hour. If you're here for history – it's Cathar country after all – Château de Montségur is 35 minutes away and Château d'Arques is within an hour.
