- Dog-friendly wildlife haven in a wooded setting
- A 25-minute drive to Lac de Gérardmer; walk to Roches Saint-Jacques
- Firepits are permitted and supermarkets are 10 minutes’ drive away
Commence your big or small Lorraine adventure… Source Naturelle en Pleine Forêt de Sapins is indeed an adventure. To get to this calm place far from any villages or houses, you’ll cross over the Peute Groutte stream and climb Chemin de Pré Fontaine.
After turning around the big right bend and parking up, simply pitch up your tent below the path and take in the scenery before you get plotting out the details of your outdoorsy break…
The wooded setting is home to the sawmill that burned down in the 1965 film The Wise Guys (Les Grandes Gueules). It’s a top spot for all those seeking a wildlife haven as their base. Handily, dogs are welcome, as are firepits. The site’s motto is “do not do to others what you would not like them to do to you”, so they welcome all friendly, thoughtful folk to stay.
Get your fix of wild hikes in the forest. The 1028-metre-high Roches Saint-Jacques is just 25 minutes’ walk away from the getaway. Part of the national forest of Noires Gouttes and based above the Vosges valleys of La Bresse and Rochesson, hiking’s a dream in this wooded spot between the Étang de Jemnaufaing pond-peat bog and Le Champâtre peat bog. Take the small path into a tunnel-like rocky corridor and scramble to the top of the rocks.
It's not just about the woods here, however. Lac de Gérardmer is 25 minutes’ drive away for those wanting to dabble in sailing, canoeing, wild swimming or fishing and the Saut du Bouchot waterfall is 10 minutes’ drive away too. There are supermarkets for snacks on the go 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions
If it wasn’t for the dense foliage around Roches Saint-Jacques, there would have been views of the peat bog Le Champâtre (10 minutes’ drive). Instead, you’ll just have to make it into an adventure of its own; it has a network of ponds with sundew plants.
In keeping with the water scenery, make your way to the Saut du Bouchot (10 minutes) waterfall in the Rochesson valley. At 28 metres in height, it’s a grand sight indeed. Wear your good shoes because there’s a stony path from the bridge at the foot of the waterfall which runs along the river to another smaller waterfall.
And perhaps a few historical sites to mix things up? Rue de Saint-Del chapel (10 minutes) or Gerbamont (40 minutes’ walk), with its pretty buildings and beekeeper products at La Miellerie du Mettey, might take your fancy.
Those who aren’t ready to quit hiking just yet can visit the meadow of Col de Menufosse (half an hour) and La Piquante Pierre (25 minutes).
