Woodland wanders without any need to drive? How fabuleux. Such are the treats in store for guests at La Clairière du Verbamont, hidden away in a peaceful clearing in the Darney forest 10 minutes’ drive from the Vosges department town of Claudon. Trails to take you on gentle strolls and lengthier rambles start straight from the site, so even the car can have a bit of a rest here. Owners Cécile and Christophe will arm you with a map and point you in the direction of some of their fave routes, such as the amble to L’Arboretum de la Hutte a few minutes from base, where giant sequoia trees stretch up towards the sky and a huge Douglas fir has been in residence for many a year. If you’re in the mood to get more adrenaline running, take a trip into Claudon to dive off the 43-metre high Pont Tatal – with bungee cord firmly attached, of course – or head instead to Fontenoy-le-Château (25 minutes) for some competitive paintballing. For lazier days, stick to the site for moments among the greenery and nights gazing up at the stars, or meeting other guests by the communal campfire. When hunger strikes, wander over to the shared outdoor kitchen or stoke up the barbie and get something cooking; you can even have a crack at using the bread oven if you wish, or leave it to the experts by signing up to join in with one of Christophe’s sociable pizza nights.

Liked The area is well thought trough with the most necessary amenities-dinking water, kitchen with running water, communal fridge. Two big fire places and individual grills are available. The owners have put thought into details to make the whole area cosy and feel hime like. Even shower/toilette room has beautiful mosaic. Beer lovers can enjoy some very tasty local beers.

Set forth on a foodie day, plucking fruit from Brisseverre Farm (10 minutes’ drive), picking up traditional sweets from Confiserie Delisvosges (15 minutes) and taking a tour of Chevrerie des Granges (25 minutes) to meet the goats and try out their cheeses.
