What a pretty place … and what unusual houses to stay in. Channel your inner Middle Earth dweller with a quest to Les Collines de Sainte-Féréole in the Corrèze department of south-west France – accommodation here is in cute hobbit-like houses built into the hill.
Les Collines is a peaceful family site over four hectares in the Sainte-Féréole hills, five minutes’ stroll from the local village and 15 minutes’ drive from shops, markets and museums in Brive-la-Gaillarde.
There’s scope aplenty for treks and adventures around the scenic Corrèze region countryside too: Les Collines de Sainte-Féréole is on the edge of Saulières forest and within easy reach of the world-famed Lascaux caves, the Château de Turenne and the labyrinth at the gardens of Colette – all absolute must-sees. The Corrèze Valley is about 30 minutes’ drive away too, for days out roaming around the local landscape.
Back at base, there’s loads on offer for all ages, including a heated pool, a kids’ area with slide, badminton, football, volleyball, pétanque and a catch-and-release fishing pond. Free activities like tai chi, pony rides and nature walks run in high season. And there’s even more – massages and à la carte beauty treatments are available on request.

Local attractions
The prehistoric caves at Lascaux (45 minutes’ drive) must be your first port of call. Book ahead for a guided tour – and here’s a tip: sometimes you can get last-minute tickets from the tourist office in Montignac (50 minutes).
Cute hilltop towns are part of this region’s backstory. So many places to choose from… but medieval Turenne (30 minutes) and its red-hued castle are absolutely worth a peek. You could also stop by the 25 medieval towers in Collonges-la-Rouge (30 minutes), named one of Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, or gorgeous Rocamadour’s cliffside restaurants and posh boutiques an hour away.
For simpler pleasures, get back to nature on Saulières forest trails (15 minutes), or ride a quad bike through the forested Corrèze Valley (30 minutes). Spend a sunny afternoon at Les Jardins de Colette (20 minutes) – but don’t lose sight of the kids in the butterfly-shaped giant maze.
