  • House of the Vultures 45 minutes’ drive; via ferrata half an hour
  • Breakfast service; snack bar; grocery and camping store; river beach
A stay at Camping Le Site de Castelbouc places you at the gates of Cévennes National Park, at the foot of the Grands Causses highlands and firmly in the Lozère region’s spectacular Gorges du Tarn. That's quite some setting for a camping holiday. This small, peaceful and family-centric campsite sits under a canopy of trees, so its pitches are partially shaded from the heat of the midsummer sun. There’s a private beach at the foot of the site, where you and the kids can safely take a dip in the Tarn river, or discover the dramatic landscapes of the gorge by kayak or canoe (you can hire them just by the river). Simple services on site cover the sale of bread and pastries every morning, as well as ice cream and drinks available from the snack bar all day long. You can stock up on life’s essentials, camping gear and regional products in the small on-site store, and keep everyone looking neat and smart thanks to coin-operated washing machines. Anything else you need, you’ll find in Sainte-Enimie (10 minutes’ drive) or Ispagnac (15 minutes). If you’re not sure about where to start your exploration of the area, check with the helpful bunch at reception (open daily 9am until 7pm).

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: Lovely campsite set by the river. We set up by a huge rock face & the river. It's a place to do canoeing & visits by parties of school children but they were not noisy. Staff very helpful & pleasant. There's a small shop at reception for basics & where you order your bread, croissants, etc. Very peaceful, clean toilets & showers, although unisex. Facilities for your Motorhome for water, electricity, gray & black waste disposal. There's not much around but within 12 minute walk up the hill, there's a lovely restaurant call The 5 arches. It's more of a charcuterie food place, although, they have their special of the day. It was one of the best charcuterie boards, I've had, we all produce locally produced.

Disliked: Nothing.

Local attractions

There are many activities to keep you happy in the Gorges du Tarn, from via ferrata climbing courses on the steep cliffs to canyoning and rock climbing (all within half an hour’s drive). Brave souls can zipwire across the gorge from Cevennes Evasion Travel Nature (20 minutes), and cyclists who relish a challenge can hire bikes from Mellow Vélos (15 minutes’ cycle ride) to head off-road onto mountain tracks like the Le Saltadou (40 minutes) for spectacular gorge views. In less physically demanding pursuits, you can fish for brown trout, perch and pike on the Tarn, get (reasonably) up close to wild Przewalski horses at Takh – Association pour le Cheval Przewalski (half an hour’s drive), or watch raptors circle in the thermals from the House of the Vultures (45 minutes). For views over the Cevennes National Park (on a clear day you can glimpse the Alps and the Pyrenees), drive up to the Météosite du Mont Aigoual (an hour), where there are also interactive displays on the weather of the region.
