Champing at the bit to spend your hols getting to know every inch of somewhere you’ve never been? Head straight to Camping de Graniers – a family-friendly site in the Gardon valley, 20 minutes’ drive from the small town of Anduze in Languedoc-Rousillon – where it’s a cinch to explore no matter how you like to get around.
In the foothills of the Cévennes and on the edge of Cévennes National Park, this is a prime spot for athletes of all stripes. Hiker? Long-distance routes are within easy reach, as are plenty of trails within the park. Biker? Settle into the saddle for zooming through the foothills of the Cévennes. Watersports fan? Set your compass for canoeing among the stunning Gorges de l’Hérault.
Don’t fancy taking your excursions that far afield? Stay closer to Anduze instead to clamber through the ruins of Château de Tornac, nab stellar views of the area from the 14th-century Tour de l’Horloge and traipse through the spectacular Bambouseraie botanical garden.
Back on site, cool off with a dip in the swimming pool, have a game of pétanque in the shade of the oaks, sit on the bar terrace with an ice cream or drink in hand, then stroll over to the restaurant for a bite. Want to look after yourself? Bring the barbecue with you, or try some of the local fare at any of the restaurants nearby.

Local attractions
If you seek to see more of the Gardon valley, climb aboard the steam train in Anduze for a jaunt through tunnels and over viaducts in old railway cars, taking in the views of La Bambouseraie, old mills and sweeping vistas.
Make sure to have a camera with you at La Cascade de la Vis, the spectacular Cirque de Navacelles (look it up, then add immediately to your list) and the world-famed Pont du Gard – bring your swimming cossie along to the latter, as you'll want to go for a dip below its arches.
For beach times, take your bucket and spade and make tracks for La Grande-Motte seaside resort (there’s a waterpark too if you can’t face sand getting everywhere) or Le Grau-du-Roi resort, and stop at Aigues-Mortes on the way for its red salt marshes and flamboyant flamingo population.
Fancy a more urban experience? The Roman arena, Roman temple (Maison Carrée) and pretty 17th-century Jardins de la Fontaine are an hour away in Nîmes, as are the museums, zoo and aquarium of Montpellier. A little longer in the car gets you to Avignon for the grand Palais des Papes, leafy Rocher des Doms and the sprawlingly fab Chartreuse de Villeneuve monastery.
