  • Relaxed family campsite near lakes and beaches at Gruissan in the Aude
  • A five-minute drive to Gruissan and Les Chalets beach, 20 to Narbonne
  • Family activities, sports, playground, karaoke, bar and restaurant
A fab location 500 metres from Étang de Gruissan lagoon and a short five-minute car journey from the nearest Mediterranean beach at Les Chalets (you can walk it in 35 minutes), plus a casual, open-air restaurant and numerous organised activities makes Camping Paradis Barberousse a cracker of a base for simple family camping holidays in the Aude. This is a fine spot for a family break – it's got a relaxed vibe, a paddling pool, inflatable play area and mini discos for the kids. Activity leaders from the Camping Paradis Academy are always on hand to advise you on day trips, and there’s usually something going on around the site – kids’ games, sports activities and tournaments, exercise classes and pétanque competitions… But what about adults? Never fear, you get your own chance to chill in saunas or laze in hot tubs at the site’s wellness centre – or you can join tours to the fishing harbour at Gruissan, local vineyards for tasting sessions and weekly hiking trips to see more of the Aude region. The fun doesn’t stop at night, with communal barbecues, dancing, quiz evenings and karaoke sessions to keep you up until late. There’s no real need to cook either, as the terrace bar and restaurants serve up snacks, drinks and tasty regional dishes to keep everybody happy and energised.

What customers say

This campground gets kudos for its peaceful vibe, handy spot near the old town and lake, and friendly staff. Sites are usually spacious and clean, as are the showers. Guests found pricing fair. However, some felt sites were crowded and noisy, especially by the road. A 11 pm curfew bothered some. No pool, but kids liked the water play area and evening entertainment. Some thought the restaurant was pricey and had service issues when problems occurred.

Powered gravel and sand campsite

Primitive gravel and sand RV campsite

Liked Location and the welcome at reception was lovely. The walk around the local area including the old town and the harbour was wonderful. The beach is a short drive away and we visited the salt flats immediately behind the site which was a surprise and worth the very short walk. Relieved to find female only shower and toilet block, which was a bit dated but kept very clean. There is a little water/park area for small children and a restaurant that looked nice but we didn't use. The teens seem to end up sitting/riding around the toilet block, and pot washing area.

Disliked The pitches felt jumbled and overcrowded. We were one of only a few caravans and had difficulty placing ourselves and a half awning. We had to leave our vehicle half parked in the pedestrian area. I really wanted to like this place, but it just didn't feel comfortable and we were happy to move on. It definitely felt more like a campsite. Motorhomes had their own area along the entrance site, and our experience may have been better placed with them ?
You have to fill your water hog at the laundry sinks and we had to manufacture a unique que way to make this work as there was no hose or adaption. Couldn't find the toilet waste and the water waste was a good walk away for the campsite area. 9

Primitive gravel and sand RV campsite

Local attractions

Beach babies have a choice of Mediterranean-side hotspots, from Les Chalets (five minutes’ drive) to peaceful Plage de Mateille beach (15 minutes), where kids can have a good run around. There are secluded beaches to discover in the Narbonnaise en Méditerranée Regional Natural Park (half an hour), where you can also go wild swimming in lagoons and sometimes spot pink flamingos stalking in the shallows. To do some challenging exploring on two feet, go hiking in the Massif de la Clape foothills (20 minutes); meanwhile, mountain bikers have around 100 kilometres of marked routes to follow direct from the campsite. Family walkers and cyclists can tone things down a bit by following level trails through the surrounding salt marshes. If you’ve the time to wander further afield, the lovely city of Narbonne (20 minutes) has a soaring cathedral and canalside walks. You can also visit the famous Fonseranes Locks flight on the Canal du Midi and push on to Béziers (both 40 minutes), or tour an ancient castle and palace at Perpignan (55 minutes) – but don’t forget to see the cute wooden houses built on stilts when you get back to home base at Gruissan (five minutes).
