Whether you are driving down to the south of France or intending to hang around and explore the wine regions and natural parks of the Champagne-Ardennes region, family-friendly Saint Nicolas Lodge is a peaceful stop in the sleepy Aube village of Saint-Nicolas-La-Chapelle. This well-equipped site offers spacious static caravans tucked into neat rows under shady trees, and decked out with kitchens, living space, bedrooms and bathrooms – basic amenities like running water and electricity are provided too. You can also expect a few handy extras including washing machines and dryers in the laundromat so you can keep the family looking presentable. Cars stay safe in the secure private parking – and the nearest airport is Châlons Vatry (an hour’s drive). Keep up your fitness regime (if you must) in the on-site gym, and you also have access to a leafy garden and terrace with picnic spots. There’s a snack bar and communal barbecue on site, and if you need to stock up with basic supplies, there’s a convenience store in Saint-Nicolas-La-Chapelle (10 minutes’ walk) – or several restaurants and burger bars within a 10-minute drive if you are off cooking for the holidays.

Local attractions

Recreational anglers, you’re in the right place – with fishing for trout on the Voulzie River (20 minutes’ drive) and no-kill coarse fishing at The Fishing Centre Sécherons (40 minutes). Hiking is a major activity too, with plenty of looped walks around the rural villages of Vallant-Saint-Georges, Droupt-Sainte-Marie and Droupt-Saint-Basle, and trails leading through the Seine Valley from Saint-Mesmin (all 40 minutes). If the kids are on board for your French adventure, treat them to a day feeding hens and grooming ponies at the Educational Farm of Saint-Hilliers (25 minutes) or let them run off energy along rope courses at the Jumping Forest Chenoise (35 minutes). There’s also a cinema and swimming pool in Provins (20 minutes) for the odd rainy day. Talking of Provins, this medieval town is a delight to explore, with mighty defence ramparts to stroll around and a centre packed with museums showcasing regional history, like the Grange aux Dîmes and the imposing ruins of the Palais Des Comtes De Champagne. A little tourist train chugs around the main attractions and you also sample cider at a local press.
