Touring the castles of the Loire Valley and looking for somewhere peaceful to rest your head? Your search could be over, for the grass pitches at Autour du Peu, 10 minutes’ drive from Le Controis-en-Sologne in the Loir-et-Cher, are surrounded by trees and set in the grounds of a private house. This is a handy spot for visiting the mighty châteaux of Cheverny (10 minutes’ drive), Chambord (half an hour) and Chenonceau (35 minutes), and it's five minutes by car to the restaurants, bar, grocery store and bakery in Fougères-sur-Bièvre, where you can also tour a lesser-known – but equally stunning – medieval castle. Whether you’re travelling by bike (the site’s on the Loire à Vélo cycling route), on foot or with four wheels, you’ll be warmly welcomed at this rural hideaway, which has a roster of simple amenities: electrical points to charge phones, a microwave, kettle and refrigerator/freezer (please bring extension cords). There’s also a no-fuss utility block with a hot shower, dry toilets and a hand-washing station with cold water. A washing machine is available for an additional fee, and once on site you can order breakfast or hire bed linen and towels for a small extra charge. A small supplement is also levied for electric bikes. The property is partially fenced and pets are welcome with prior arrangement. The owners have dogs and cats of their own, so please respect their space.

Liked Philippe was a great host who went beyond to help when we had a problem with our van.
The site is no frills but is small, has all the basics (no toilet disposal) and is very peaceful, which is what we like.
There are no bins or service point so be prepared to take rubbish and grey water etc away with you.

Merci aussi d'avoir partagé vos impressions pour les futurs voyageurs. Je voulais juste apporter une toute petite précision : notre prairie est en réalité très grande, elle fait 8 000 m² ! Comme nous n'accueillons que 3 véhicules à la fois, cela permet à chacun d'avoir énormément d'espace tout en profitant du calme absolu.
Effectivement, nos installations restent simples et, comme indiqué sur Pitchup, il n'est pas possible de faire la vidange sur place. Concernant les déchets, nous avons bien des poubelles pour les ordures ménagères à disposition sur place. En revanche, la commune ne proposant pas de ramassage pour le tri sélectif, nous devons l'emporter nous-mêmes et nous comptons donc sur la responsabilité de chacun pour gérer ses recyclables. Ce fut une belle rencontre, et nous vous souhaitons une très bonne continuation et de magnifiques voyages sur la route !

Concernant le lavabo, nous souhaitons simplement apporter une petite précision : un lavabo avec du savon se trouve bien à la sortie des toilettes, comme vous pouvez également le voir sur les photos de notre aire. Les toilettes sont également équipées de gel hydroalcoolique.

Vous l’avez peut-être simplement manqué lors de votre passage, et nous souhaitions le préciser afin que les futurs voyageurs aient une information complète.

Liked Quiet and remote.
Good electric hook up. Water and hose provided. Toilet a natural type, ok.
Shower Good.
Rural location peaceful.
Hosts amazing friendly and helpful.
A little washing up area had a nice tea and coffee making area.
So happy on our first one night stay we decided to fit in a minimum 2 day stop over on our return from Bourges to Normandy.
For those with concerns its a flat level big field and easy driveway gated access. So very safe.

Liked Quiet and peaceful rural site in owner's garden with basic but clean facilities . Very friendly welcome. Well placed for cycle routes and chateaux. Lovely to be in the countryside and hear the birdsong and be surrounded by trees.

Liked Beautiful quiet location listening to the array of bird noises and identifying them was a lovely experience and watching the bats when the sun went down was incredible, the facilities are quirky with an extra bonus of a microwave to use, would definitely stay here again and Phillippe and Isabelle were very welcoming.

Local attractions

First stop on your castle-bagging campaign will probably be Cheverny (10 minutes’ drive), where you can putter along the estate’s waterways by electric boat, tour impressive period rooms and view the eccentric Tintin exhibition. Overlooking the Loire and once home to Catherine de Medici, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire (20 minutes) has a contemporary art gallery and a splendidly ornate interior to admire as well as English-style parkland. Bristling with towers, Château de Chambord (half an hour) is the largest castle in the Loire Valley; here you can explore the house, gardens, stables and vineyard. Fairytale Château de Chenonceau (35 minutes) spans the river and has a famed tapestry collection as well as formal gardens to discover. If you need a break from the Loire’s exquisite landmarks, take a day to visit endangered pandas, silverback gorillas and tigers at ZooParc de Beauval (35 minutes).
