- Forest site with fishing and boating lake in the Perche Regional Park
- An hour from Chartres' UNESCO cathedral and river cruises
- Family and kids' activities; two swimming pools; bar and restaurant
Ah, the Perche... A special part of France’s Eure-et-Loir region filled with forests, lakes and hills... fields and lakes and orchards... and more lakes.
If you’re fond of the aquatic life you’ll fit right in at Camping Senonches, as it’s right next to one of those many lakes: you can be fishing the waters (with permits bought from reception), boating across them, dipping your toes in them or just basking in the sun beside them in minutes. If you should feel like sampling some of the lakes, ponds, pools and rivers further afield, take your pick from a few hundred in the Perche Natural Regional Park.
Fret not however if fishing and boating aren’t your bag, because this family-friendly forest site 25 minutes’ drive from Senonches is full of other stuff to get up to. Family activities include archery and zipwires, magic and circus skills workshops, horse riding and treasure hunts, and there are film shows and live entertainments in the evenings to round it all off.
In the daytime, kids’ activities like fishing lessons, craft workshops and hut building can keep the brood amused while you sit and unwind on the terraced bar, do a few laps in the indoor or outdoor pools or sidle over to the forest spa to steam yourself into a state of maximum chilledness in the sauna and hot tub.

Local attractions
Heading off site needn’t alter the tempo: taking a carriage ride drawn by the sturdy local percheron draught horses is a local tradition and a fine way to see the countryside up close at a slower pace. Let the site team fix you up with vehicle, steed and driver… and off you trot.
A 25-minute drive away, Senonches is good for stocking up, wanders round the Friday markets and tours of the château dungeon. If you like a historic building or two, the ruined château at Ferté-Vidame and the fairytale fortress of Nogent-le-Rotrou (half an hour and 50 minutes) make a cracking combo of castles. On a grander scale, the UNESCO-listed Gothic cathedral at Chartres (an hour) is an unmissable part of any Perche itinerary, with its flying buttresses, mighty spires and stained glass still intact since the 13th century.
Stick about in the city to learn more about the mysterious cathedral décor at the stained glass museum, or visit the one-man monument that is La Maison Picassiette, a domestic dwelling turned over three decades into a 3D live-in mosaic by its talented owner.
Finish off your Chartres forays with a boat cruise down the Eure, or if the weather’s playing up, a spot of ice skating at L’Odysée leisure complex.
