  • Quiet Morbihan family site on the edge of Brocéliande Forest
  • Merlin’s Tomb 10 minutes’ drive and historic Ploërmel 25 minutes
  • Bar, food trucks and grocery store; guided walks and storytelling
They call this place Camping Le Val Aux Fées – and while you may not spot any fairies while you’re staying here, there’s certainly a magical atmosphere in this part of Morbihan. Five minutes’ walk from the centre of Concoret, this neatly landscaped site is on the edge of Brittany’s famed Brocéliande Forest, a place with a myriad of ancient sights, some of which evoke ancient legends of Merlin and King Arthur. From here you’ll easily be able to get out for walks in the forest or explore the wider area, taking in lakes, châteaux and heritage towns as you go. Between outings, chill out on site – there’s plenty of shade under the mature trees, and a warm, friendly vibe throughout the place. Myths and magic are all very well, but what about the practicalities? Well, those have been nicely thought out, with a bar that’s open every day for breakfast orders, hot dogs and pizzas, and food trucks regularly rolling up in the early evening with all sorts of tempting local goodies on offer. You can also pick up essentials and regional produce at the grocery store, or walk for a few minutes to reach Concoret’s shop and places to eat. A playground, ping-pong tables and a pétanque court should help to keep the kids busy, and in summer there’s all sorts of extra stuff to join in with: guided foraging walks, storytelling sessions and craft or produce markets are often on the schedule.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Nice quiet site with information in 3 languages. Level pitches, some lovely walks in the woods nearby. I only stayed 1 night on my way back to Roscoff so didn't explore the area.

Disliked: I can see the owners have planted trees but these are only small at the moment, so the pitches are quite open with very little shade or privacy.
The showers were also annoying - push button as usual but only stayed on about 10 seconds and you couldn't hold them on.

Local attractions

From this site you’ll be able to walk straight out into Brocéliande Forest, a wonderful place to explore whether you believe the legends or simply want to wander through woodlands. Magic seekers can seek wisdom at the ancient oak tree Chêne à Guillotin (five minutes’ drive), see Merlin’s Tomb (10 minutes) and visit La fontaine de Barenton (15 minutes’ drive), where Merlin is said to have met Vivien. Château de Comper - Arthurian Centre (five minutes) is a good place to learn about all the backstories. Away from the ancient legends, Lac de Tremelin (20 minutes) is a nice place for a walk, some birdwatching or a mini adventure on the treetop trail. You can also swim, fish or launch canoes and pedalos from the little beach (lifeguarded in July and August). Brocéliande Gardens (half an hour) is another lovely place for a relaxed wander. If you like to explore historic towns, there are two excellent options for you nearby. The first is Ploërmel (25 minutes), where you can see vestiges of the ancient walls, and the other is Rennes (45 minutes), full of half-timbered houses and flower-filled parks.
