  • Wooden cabins surrounded by the countryside and Forêt d'Othe
  • A 45-minute drive from Sens and Chablis and 50 minutes from Auxerre
  • Outdoor games and a shared terrace; supermarket 20 minutes’ drive away
‘Smart’, ‘rural’ and ‘downright gorgeous’ are a few phrases you might deem most fitting for the wooden cabins at L'Echapée Belle. Totally designed and fitted out by the owners, they were fashioned out of a 24-metres-squared shipping container and placed in a spot surrounded by the countryside and the Forêt d'Othe. Each unit is suitable for up to four people, kids too. There’s a bicycle and a childs trailer available and outdoor games for the kids. Inside each unit, lay any sleepy heads down in the bedroom, which has a double bed and sheets, or in the living-dining room, which has a two-seater sofa bed next to a television. Muddle into a new recipe in the kitchen in each unit. It has a microwave, kettle, coffee machine and hob (and note that a large supermarket is handily 20 minutes’ drive away). There’s a separate bathroom with extra linens. A wooden terrace is shared with other guests and laid out with seating because, after all, those views can’t be ignored for long. Staying here is your chance to explore not just the Forêt d'Othe but places like Sens, Chablis, Troyes and Auxerre, which are all within 45 to 50 minutes’ drive of the site and famous for things like Chablis wine, medieval architecture, markets and cathedrals.

Local attractions

First stop: Sens (45 minutes’ drive)? The Gothic cathedral is its best-known attribute – it encouraged quite a few copycats around France and Europe – but the markets and medieval old town are just as splendid. Second: Chablis (45 minutes)? Now, this is a title that wine connoisseurs might already be familiar with. The famed, slightly acidic Chablis wine comes from this region. Very many people visit the area to sample a glass or two, and it also helps that the town has some just-stunning medieval houses. Save a space in your itinerary for Troyes (50 minutes), which has an old town with half-timbered houses and a few Gothic churches – oh yes, not just the one. Auxerre (50 minutes) is beckoning too. Surrounded by vineyards, the city has a gorgeous riverside slope with an old town, churches and a cathedral. There’s no need to rush things; a slow-paced day just wandering around (and sipping a few wines or tucking to some local delicacies) is always welcome.
