  • River Saône campsite five minutes’ drive from Saint-Jean-de-Losne
  • Auxonne 20 minutes’ drive and Dijon 45 minutes
  • Fishing on the river; kids’ entertainment; restaurant and snack bar
Peace, quiet and family time is what it’s all about at Camping Les Herlequins, a motorhome and tent site on the banks of Burgundy’s River Saône. Set in around 90 acres of greenery five minutes’ drive from the centre of Saint-Jean-de-Losne, the grass pitches are all partially shaded and some sit directly on the river banks. The pretty setting and well-kept, heated facilities will please all comers, as will the on-site restaurant serving delicious local cuisine made with quality local produce. There’s a relaxed vibe to the licensed bar – open from breakfast to supper for snacks and drinks – and if you’re after organised entertainment, you can join singing sessions, cooking lessons and games or crafts with the kids. Lively musical evenings often take place on the site too. Happily for the kids, they can also have a run about on the slides and swings, challenge mum and dad to games of pétanque or score goals on the mini-football field. Adults may prefer fishing on the Saône, and if you fancy an epic trip along the river banks, hire electric bikes (easy to use, well-maintained and insured) from the site and get pedalling.

What customers say

This lovely campground gets kudos for its prime riverside spot, near a small town. Guests loved the clean washrooms, great on-site restaurant/bar, and spacious, often shaded sites. Staff were generally friendly, though some mentioned hygiene and dated facilities. Despite small issues, many guests would happily return.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Very friendly and welcoming staff. Excellent restaurant/cafe on site that serves a small menu, but fantastic food. Facilities clean. Easy access to town.
The staff do go the extra mile to help. Our French is limited and they really are so helpful. We had to borrow a 2 pin EHU adapter as they haven't changed to the 3 pin yet, due to cost. We were able to purchase one at Narbonne Accessories in Chenove, a 20 mile drive away.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked Nothing about the place lovely view of river on leaving

Disliked The whole campsite was a muddy boggy mess, small area of gravely shingle to park van on grass next to this for parking the car was a quagmire. I had to park my car on the lane of the pitch otherwise I would have gone ankle deep in mud. The lanes where also all covered in mud from vehicles that had left. No hot water for washing up the dishes. Hardly any lighting and to be honest the guests staying there looked like long term homeless people who where living there some under tarpaulin, I almost felt I was staying on a travellers site. If there had been any other sites available within a reasonable distance would have left it made a total mess of my car and caravan. We watched one motorhome arrive he immediately got bogged down and was sliding all over the place and ended up parking on the lane which blocked it for movement around the site. This site should not be booked out of season as it cannot cope when the ground is wet

Would definitely stay again.

Die Betreiber sind sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Saubere Sanitäranlagen. Das kleine Restaurant serviert einheimische Gerichte und der Besuch lohnt sich auf jeden Fall.

Local attractions

Fishing folk, gather round, for this site offers direct access to a small Saône river beach and its diverse fishing, ranging from perch to carp. If you’d rather float down the river than fish in it, hire the site’s own houseboat from reception and chug along the tree-lined waterway. There are also several long-distance hikes passing along the riverbanks to follow on foot or by bike, including the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in western Spain. If you’re looking to explore by car, make a stop at historic Auxonne (20 minutes’ drive) to see the landmark fort and well-preserved arsenal built by Vauban in 1690, and then have a wander around cobbled streets lined with ochre-coloured half-timbered houses. Gorgeous Dijon (45 minutes) is a splendid spot for a day trip, where you can marvel at medieval and Renaissance art in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, then pick up gourmet cheeses and charcuterie from Les Halles Market to eat in the Jardin Botanique de l’Arquebuse.
