Hankering after a holiday in the French countryside? Fancy swapping your usual neighbours for a 50-strong group of grass-fed cows for a little while? If the answer is 'oui', then crack on towards Camping Paysan de la Gilberdière, a site on an organic farm home to a menagerie of animals including a dog, chickens, rabbits, cats, goats and donkeys.
On the whole, life is simple at this spot just outside Berjou in the Orne department – but handy amenities are thrown in for good measure. Think stone barbecues, a fridge and solar oven for easy food prep, as well as a games room with a reading corner to make sure there’s always some shelter from the weather. Keep your food and cooking kit in one of the lockers, and wash down meals with a glass of apple juice made from produce picked at the farm’s orchard and pressed on site.
Activities are as low-key as you’d expect from this chilled-out place. Feel free to explore the organic farm – whether on foot, bike or horseback – and make sure to ask the friendly owners about chances to learn how to care for the animals and environment.
Looking for things to do locally as well? An equestrian centre is 200 metres away if you feel like embarking on a riding lesson and there’s Vélo-Rail – for a combo of a cycling and train trip – a couple of kilometres away.
The site has three showers, with water heated by a wood-chip boiler, and the same number of toilets (two of which are dry toilets).

Local attractions
For one of the best views of your surroundings, roam up to the Rock of Oëtre (15 minutes’ drive) and look out across the gorgeous greenery in an area known as Normandy’s answer to Switzerland. You could also wander or cycle straight from the farm along hiking and mountain bike paths through the countryside.
To get out on the water, point your compass towards the canoe rentals at Pont d'Ouilly (10 minutes) or Clécy (15 minutes); the latter commune also has a single-track summer sledging facility with views over a vast viaduct.
Or perhaps you’d prefer days on the coast? If so, set off for Ouistreham (an hour) – Sword beach is famed as a location of the D-day landings. Historically minded types will want to stop off enroute at Caen's 11th-century château and its multimedia museum dedicated to the history of World War II, the Cold War and the 1944 Battle of Normandy.
