  • La Pierre Saint-Martin ski resort half an hour’s drive
  • Private decking and wildflower gardens; Nordic bath and e-bike rental
You’re in for a double helping of treats when you book a stay at Kokoni, a tiny glampsite in the Atlantic Pyrenees village of Arette. Firstly, the accommodation in smart, stylish microlodges is gorgeous, and secondly, you can feast your eyes on spectacular 360-degree views of wildflower meadows and forested peaks in the high-altitude Barétous Valley. Right in Haut-Béarn and a short walk from the banks of the Vert d’Arette river, the handful of units are all about contemporary comfort, with well-appointed kitchens, a dining area and cosy space for lounging in comfy chairs. Modern ensuite bathrooms are kitted out with power showers, and the bedrooms have handily laid-out storage and hanging space. Glass doors give on to a private decking area, where you can chill as you soak up the alpine views, or spark up your barbecue to eat alfresco. It’s time to slow down, read a good book in your garden amid borders planted with wildflowers, laze in a deck chair or jump in the Nordic bath to unwind even further. If you’re feeling more active, borrow e-bikes from the site owners and get out into the hills on cycling expeditions, or in winter head up to the Haut-Béarn resort of La Pierre Saint-Martin (half an hour’s drive) for more alpine beauty as you whizz down the pistes.

Local attractions

Explore two countries in one go: cross the border (35 minutes’ drive) into Spain to explore the rural regions of Navarre and Aragon. Head up to the Mirador de Larra-Belagua (45 minutes) for views over the Pyrenees, or wander alpine meadows in the Collado de Lapatía (55 minutes) hiking area. Walk up the dramatic river gorge to the Cascada de Arrako waterfall (50 minutes), or get kitted out for high altitude and hike foothills up to the peak of Paquiza de Linzola (90 minutes to the car park). Go underground on a guided tour of the limestone caves complex at Grotte de la Verna (35 minutes). For an understanding of local 20th-century history, visit the Camp de Gurs Memorial (also 35 minutes), marking the spot of a detention camp that housed Spanish and Jewish refugees in the 1940s. If you're with kids needing to let off energy, take lively huskies for a stroll at Tracés Sauvages (25 minutes), or spend a day paintballing and clambering around on treetop ropes at Aventure Parc Aramits - Accrobranche (15 minutes).
