  • Peaceful Vézère Valley farm site with lovely views and animals to meet
  • Lascaux caves 20 minutes' drive; half an hour to Dordogne châteaux
  • Swimming pool, paddling pool and high-season activities and dinners
What a lot there is to do for guests at Camping La Ferme du Pelou, overlooking the Vézère Valley in the Périgord Noir area of the Dordogne. Easily accessed from the D706 between Tursac and Les Eyzies, this is an excellent location for touring the area, and it’s got a good collection of its own leisure facilities too. As you’ll have guessed from the name, this site is part of a farm, so there will be animals to meet while you’re here – horses, donkeys, goats, pigs, chickens and rabbits among them. That’s usually a popular feature for the kids, as is the presence of a pair of outdoor pools – a main swimming pool and a paddling pool for the younger splashers. Beyond those, the site also has a playground, a pétanque court, table tennis, a volleyball/football pitch… and a peaceful, shaded relaxation area for when you need some quiet time. During high season, you’ll often find various activities popping up on site: pétanque competitions, donkey rides, animal feeding and sociable dinners may be on the schedule. If it’s not a dinner evening, pick up supplies locally, store them in the shared fridge and then light up your barbecue and/or set up your meal at the picnic tables. There’s a washing-up area provided for dealing with the plates, and a launderette on hand in case anyone spills their dinner. Getting out into the local area, you’ll be able to fill days with things like canoeing, hiking and fishing, or touring the area’s castles, caves and historic villages – there are plenty of options nearby.

Local attractions

Start your break by exploring some of the local countryside on a walk – the site reception has maps you can request detailing some of the trails that start just outside or close by, with gorgeous Vézère Valley views. Alternatively, hire canoes from Les Eyzies (five minutes’ drive) to paddle along the Vézère. There’s some stunning scenery around this area – and that continues under the surface too, as you’ll find out if you pay visits to Grotte de Font-de-Gaume (five minutes), Les grottes du Roc de Cazelle (five minutes) and Grotte du Grand Roc (10 minutes). The world-famous painted caves of Lascaux (20 minutes) are worth visiting, and you can learn all about the area’s ancient history at Préhisto Parc (10 minutes). For man-made attractions, check out the intriguing troglodyte village at Abri de la Madeleine (10 minutes) or explore rather grander dwellings at the châteaux of the Dordogne Valley – Beynac, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and Milandes are all within a half-hour drive.
