It's free, quick and easy!
- Périgord Noir site on the Dordogne with access to a pebble beach
- A 10-minute drive from zoo, gardens and a treetop adventure park
- Snack bar, canoeing, kayaking, pétanque and hikes from site
Castles and gardens and monkeys, mon Dieu! If having hols within 10 minutes’ drive of all of that appeals, then hurry along to Camping Le Bourniou, a family-friendly site less than five minutes from the town of Saint-Julien-de-Lampon in the Dordogne region of Aquitaine.
For scenic explores of Périgord Noir, this is an easy place to start from on the banks of the Dordogne. There are plenty of routes starting from site and guests can take to the water for canoeing and kayaking, follow hiking trails along the river or clamber into the saddle for a leisurely cycle along the nearby greenway – keeping eyes peeled for châteaux and jardins along the way.
Lazier days can start with fishing or swims, or by soaking up some Aquitaine sun on the pebble beach – then things can turn a little more competitive in the afternoon with ping pong or pétanque, or with a stroll into Saint-Julien-de-Lampon to go game-set-match on the tennis courts.
Périgord Noir is a prime spot for gourmands, so nab some eats nearby and be sure not miss out on local delicacies like black truffles and foie gras. Feeling less adventurous? A snack bar on site should fulfil most cravings, and there’s a shared barbecue when something grilled is all that will do.

Local attractions
To start hols with a bit of monkeying around, head first to the Réserve Zoologique de Calviac (five minutes’ drive from base) to get up close with lemurs, tamarinds, marmosets and a load of non-primate endangered animals, then swing along to Monkey’s Forest for some treetop adventure courses and La Forêt des Ecureuils (that’s squirrels…) for more treetop time, as well as paintball and climbing walls.
Returning to solid ground, take a step back in time with visits to the many châteaux within 45 minutes – including Marqueyssac, Milandes, Castelnaud, Puymartin and Beynac – or with a stop in Sarlat-la-Canéda to be awed by the cathedral, mosey around the indoor food market and sample the wares at the local brewery.
For an afternoon in the fresh air, there are plenty of jardins très jolies hereabouts: Les Jardins de Cadiot are worth strolling around 10 minutes away, the spectacular aquatic botanical garden of Jardins d’Eau (15 minutes) should be paddled towards at great speed, and appreciation for exotic plants should be allowed to grow at the Bambousaie de la Roque-Gageac bamboo gardens.
If that’s enough above-ground exploration, dive below the surface to view replicas of the Lascaux caves and their prehistoric art – but not before tracing the winding streets of stunning Rocamadour, 45 minutes away.
