The surroundings are smart at Koko Holidays at Camping Le Moulin de la Pique, and so is the accommodation. This Dordogne site is part of the Le Moulin de la Pique estate, with 18th-century buildings all around, and guests stay in rental tents equipped with much of what one needs for a comfy holiday.
All the accommodation here is built on solid decking with carpet over part of it – so it’s all solid and cosy underfoot. Kitchens are kitted out with a fridge, freezer and gas stove, plus a coffee machine and all sorts of crockery and utensils. Sleeping areas are in a lockable inner tent, and outdoor furniture is provided as well. (You’ll just need to bring your own towels, tea towels, bed linen and duvets or sleeping bags.)
There’s much provided away from the tents too: the site has four swimming pools (one of which is covered) with waterslides, plus a fishing lake, a playground and sports fields where the kids can play games and have a good run about.
A riverside picnic area is a lovely spot for outdoor eating, as is the terrace outside the restaurant, where guests can dine on traditional dishes and sip local wines. If you fancy heading out for dinner or picking up ingredients to do your own, it’s a five-minute drive to the village of Belvès for shops and restaurants.

Local attractions
Start your local explores with a wander around Belvès (five minutes’ drive away), taking in the château, the troglodyte caves and the viewpoint out over the local scenery. After that, learn a bit more about local history and lifestyle at the Museum La Rue Du Temps Qui Passe (15 minutes) and Ecomusée de la Noix (20 minutes).
There are often canoe trips organised by staff on site, but if you’d rather sort your own there are several hire places within a 20-minute drive, for outings on the wide and calm waters of the Dordogne. Tie your river trip in with visits to Grottes de Maxange (15 minutes), Château des Milandes (20 minutes), Château de Beynac (25 minutes) and Jardins de Marqueyssac (25 minutes).
This being the Dordogne, there are of course several vineyards and wineries around to visit; if you’ve got the kids in tow, skip that in favour of finding more active times horse riding, paintballing or climbing up into the trees at AirParc Périgord (20 minutes).
