- Grass pitches a kilometre from Munster, with views of the Vosges
- Colmar 20 minutes’ drive; Freiburg im Breisgau an hour and 10 minutes
- Kids’ club and playground; pétanque and badminton courts; cycle hire
Named after the river on whose bank it sits, Camping Le Parc de la Fecht is a lush site about a kilometre from the town of Munster, in the Alsace region of eastern France. A 20-minute drive due east takes you to Colmar (famed for its half-timbered houses), while 35 minutes on the windy D417 road leads west to Le Hohneck and the Vosges Mountains. All around are wooded hills and spectacular views.
The electric grass pitches here appeal to hiking enthusiasts and keen anglers (fishing is permitted in La Fecht), but also to families with young children (and dogs). In addition to organised activities for kids aged four to 12, there is a shaded playground with a small adventure course, ping-pong tables and a giant chess board. The grown-ups, meanwhile, can indulge in their own play time on the pétanque court… There is also an outdoor badminton court, not to mention organised sporting sessions for guests, from yoga to stretching.
It might prove difficult to leave this peaceful spot, but when you decide to explore the local area, a cool way to do so is on two wheels (you can hire a bike directly from the site). Check out the Musée de la Maison du Fromage or learn about missionary and philosopher Albert Schweitzer at a museum in his house in Gunsbach (both within a 10-minute bike ride), then cross the river and cycle past the pretty chalets of Griesbach-au-Val (15 minutes) to open countryside.

Local attractions
Known as ‘Little Venice’, the area around the river Lauch in Colmar (20 minutes’ drive) is an Instagrammer’s dream. Head to the Rue des Tanneurs or Rue des Ecoles bridges for a splendid background of pastel-coloured half-timbered houses. In the Old Town, Musée Bartholdi is dedicated to the sculptor who designed New York’s Statue of Liberty.
Bounced back and forth between France and Germany several times in its history, the medieval Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg (45 minutes) has a formidable position atop a forested outcrop. Explore the castle’s splendid living quarters (including the Kaiser Room, with its colourful murals), then check out the medicinal and kitchen gardens.
Cross the border into Germany and head to Freiburg im Breisgau (an hour and 10 minutes), where a hike up to the Kanonenplatz rewards you with expansive views of this lively university city. Attractions in the Old Town include the Museum Natur und Mensch, exploring natural history and ethnology, and the Augustiner Museum of art, housed in a former monastery.
