- Quiet touring site 25 minutes’ drive to Odense on the island of Funen
- Egeskov Castle and the Viking Museum Ladby both 35 minutes’ drive
- Forest walks, indoor swimming pool and public bar with billiards table
Heading to the Danish ‘garden island’ of Funen? Then you’re probably keen to escape the rat race and pitch up somewhere peaceful, far from the pressures of 21st-century life. You should fare nicely at Kjaersgaard, a small-scale touring site on a forested private estate in the centre of the island.
A stay at Kjaersgaard is as laid-back as its leafy island home. Camping guests can follow woodland walks on the left-hand side of the driveway, and use the indoor swimming pool and its seating area for a small extra cost. Bar Nr. 7 opens on Thursday evening or Friday afternoon for local beers and bespoke cocktails; you can also play billiards and other games, put your feet up in the conservatory and sit outside on the terrace.
The grass pitches are fully serviced (electricity incurs an extra cost), nicely level and partially shaded by mature trees. Practical facilities include a shower (bring your own soap etc) and loo, water taps and a washing machine and tumble drier (use them for a small fee). Dogs are not allowed as the site owners have their own dog, who likes to have a wander around and say ‘hello’ to everyone on his patch.

Local attractions
The pace of life at Kjaersgaard may be chilled, but there’s plenty to do around and about on the island of Funen. As well as numerous cycling and walking trails along quiet country lanes, there’s a castle worthy of your attention. Egeskov Castle (35 minutes’ drive) is a red-brick Gothic edifice surrounded by a moat and open for guided tours of its extravagantly furnished apartments, classic-car museum and formal gardens with a maze.
The Viking Museum Ladby (also 35 minutes) features Denmark’s only known ship grave; it is the burial place of a Viking king who died in 925 AD, who was interred with his horses and dogs. Outside on the Kerteminde Fjord, you can see a painstakingly accurate reconstruction of the original wooden ship.
Funen’s main city is Odense (25 minutes), birthplace of storyteller Hans Christian Andersen in 1805. You can visit his modest, half-timbered childhood home and the rather more substantial H.C. Andersen’s House, an immersive museum designed by architect Kengo Kuma that brings the author’s fairytales back to life in immersive displays.
