There’s a lake in the name of this Central Denmark site, and that’s because there’s a lake in very close proximity. In fact Bøllingsø Camping is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the shores of Bølling Lake (Bølling Sø in Danish) and surrounded by forests and meadows, making it a lovely spot for a relaxed getaway in this area.
The forest, meadow and lake scenery means plenty of options close by for walking and cycling as well as lots of nice little corners on site where you can relax and soak up the natural setting. As a family-friendly site there are also lots of things here to keep everyone nicely entertained throughout your stay – the open-air pool and kids’ pool are likely to be highlights, but you can also play games of pétanque and miniature golf or meet the friendly pigs and goats at the mini farm.
A playground and giant jumping pillow should help tire the kids out ready for a good night’s sleep – and probably also build up a good appetite for dinner, which you can cook up at the site’s barbecue area (pick up supplies a couple of kilometres away in Engesvang). There’s also a campfire area where you can all cosy up for an evening of fireside chatter.
Days out? You won’t be short of choice – there are lots of outdoor activities nearby, along with museums, animal parks and family attractions (not least Legoland, 50 minutes’ drive away…).

A cable measuring at least 10 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.- The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/06 and 15/08 (subject to weather conditions).
- A charge of DKK10.00 ($2.12) applies for the use of the shower.

Power optional grass and gravel campsite
Liked Very friendly owners of a lovely campsite. The pitches are generous and in amongst the trees.
Excellent Asian food available on site too
Disliked We only stayed for one night enroute to Iceland, next time it will be for longer.

Local attractions
This is a fabulous area for outdoor activities – as well as wandering around your local lake, you can also head to the clean waters of Slåensø (25 minutes’ drive) for a swim, go canoeing and paddleboarding on the Gudenå river (20 minutes) or climb the Himmelbjerget (half an hour) for some splendid views. If that all sounds too active, how about a trip on the paddle steamer Hjejlen from Silkeborg (20 minutes)?
While you’re in Silkeborg, you may also like to visit some of the museums – including Museum Jorn and Museum Silkeborg – or Aqua Aquarium & Animal Park, Scandinavia’s biggest freshwater aquarium. For more of the cultural outings, plan a day out in Aarhus (50 minutes); if it’s the wildlife outings you’re more interested in, try the rainforest domes at Randers Regnskov (an hour) or go on a safari through Givskud Zoo - Zootopia (40 minutes).
Need more outings for the kids? Challenge them to the mazes and brain teasers at Labyrinthia (25 minutes) or take them to the traditional rides of Tivoli Friheden in Aarhus (50 minutes). Billund (50 minutes) is another option, with the WOW Park as well as the famed Legoland Resort.
