  • Wildlife haven with mountain views at Šluknov in the Czech Republic
  • Bohemian Switzerland National Park half an hour’s cycle ride
  • Swimming and boating lake; sports courts; snack bar in high season
Thanks to its location on the outskirts of the pretty town of Šluknov, five minutes’ drive from the German border, a stay at Camping de Rainbow in the Czech Republic means you can explore two countries for the price of one. This family-friendly and rural spot has spacious camping pitches on an expanse of meadow backed by forest and mountains. While the vibe is ultra-peaceful and quiet, there’s loads for everyone to do on site in high season, from kids’ storytelling, cosy evenings snuggled around the campfire and football tournaments to barbecues and a playground for younger guests, who might also like to feed the sheep on the animal pasture every morning. Sporty types can play table tennis, beach volleyball and football, join archery sessions, swim and sail in the site’s lake, or head by bike into the Bohemian Switzerland National Park (half an hour’s cycle) direct from the pitches. Catering is all sorted too; a pop-up snack bar serves Dutch specialities in high season, and you can source breakfast pastries from the local bakery (five minutes’ stroll). Stock up on barbecue goodies at the supermarket (10 minutes), and if cooking’s not an option, make a beeline for the dining options in Šluknov.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Very nice campsite in a picturesque location, with clean facilities and very friendly staff.

Disliked: Allows campfires but doesn’t sell its own firewood, which I’ve known many campsites to do. We were told we could forage for wood ourselves but there wasn’t much to be found. So advice is to bring your own firewood if you want a camp fire.

FHU grass campsite

Liked: Proximity to the lake was good and dogs were allowed in. The tent pitches were clean and very quiet when I stayed (mid June). There was wifi although the password was hidden at the bottom of the receipt which wasn’t pointed out to me.

Disliked: Didn’t like having to tap my shower card to get into the toilet block as it was frustrating if I forgot to bring it with me.

FHU grass campsite

Disliked: Prysznic

Local attractions

Amble, run or cycle past bizarre rock formations on the looped trails of Kyjov-Krasna Lipa (20 minutes’ drive), or tramp through river gorges to the soaring rock bridge of Pravčická Archway (50 minutes) – location of scenes in ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’. At Jetřichovice (35 minutes), hike up to the truly spectacular – and naturally formed –rock castle at Falkenstein (15 minutes’ walk) for views over forested hills. Over the border in Germany, spend the day exploring dramatic hilltop Fortress Königstein (45 minutes’ drive), or for darker days out, tour the detention cells and exercise yards at Bautzen II (half an hour), the former state-run, Communist-era prison run by the notorious Stasi secret police. If the kids are getting restless after a day or two of cultural visits, spoil them with animal encounters at Liberec Zoo and go karting at Parkovací dům Forum (both an hour’s drive). Let them run off any excess energy on high-ropes courses at Football Park Dymnik (15 minutes), or get all the family together for mind-bending challenges at AdrenalinPoint - EscapeRoom (20 minutes).
