Peaceful site by a secluded bay in the northwest of Hvar
A five-minute drive to Hvar Town; 25 minutes to Stari Grad

Hvar may have a bit of a reputation as a party island for some people – but you’ll feel a world away from all that when you stay at Camp Vira, up on the northwestern corner of the island. This is a gorgeous seafront spot right by the beach in a secluded bay that’s got the peaceful vibe of a desert-island getaway despite being only about five minutes’ drive from Hvar Town. Here you’ll be able to stay right by the sea, waking each day to views of the bright blue Adriatic and being able to wander out onto the beach whenever you feel like it. The 200-metre pebble beach is lovely and sheltered, so it’s a good spot for sunbathing and swimming, even for younger kids. You can also launch paddleboards and other non-motorised craft from the beach here. It’s likely you’ll be able to while away many an hour just loafing around at the beach, but if you require a bit more activity in your day you can play games of beach volleyball, table tennis and miniature golf around the site, or bring/hire bikes to explore a little more of your local surroundings. All of this can be fuelled with meals and drinks bought on site – the beach bar is open throughout the day for pizzas, toasties and the like (plus plenty of cool drinks) and the seafront restaurant serves up a menu of seafood and other local produce at tables out on the sea-view terrace.

Local attractions

No one would blame you if you decided not to move from this spot for the duration of your stay, but as the island is so very gorgeous it is a good idea to get out and explore if you can. There are lots of lovely beaches all along the coastline – Malo Zaraće and Pokonji Dol (both 15 minutes’ drive) are a couple of the top spots to seek out. Down in Hvar Town (five minutes), you can explore the cathedral, climb up to the fortress for stunning views and simply stroll around soaking up the atmosphere and looking out for little cafés and bars. It’s also the place to sign up for boat trips to the Blue Cave or Pakleni Islands. Elsewhere around the island you can wander around Stari Grad (25 minutes), stroll by the canal in Vrboska (half an hour) or tantalise all your senses with a tour of Hvar Lavender Fields (15 minutes), taking in the scents and views before trying some lavender ice cream back down in town.

Primitive grass and earth RV campsite (sea view)

Liked: Although it's quite a big camp, it is really well set out and the pitches fell quite separate and spacious. It's right on the beach and has adequate facilities (lots of toilets and showers). Friendly staff and good choice of level pitches.

Disliked: The camp feels it could do with a bit of work to update it.

Liked: Lovely campsite with beach access. Friendly and helpful staff.
Good facilities.

Disliked: The rocky ground was a nightmare for our tent pegs although this is the nature of the terrain and can't really be helped!
The facilities could have been a tad cleaner.
