- Eco-friendly tipis in jungle or beachside at Puerto Viejo de Talamanca
- Next to Playa Cocles beach; 20 minutes’ drive to Cahuita National Park
- Beachfront, with pool, restaurant and bar, surfing and yoga classes
Looking to stay right on the beach or fancy a mini-break in the jungle? Then get yourself to Selina Puerto Viejo, a chilled, eco-friendly beachside spot shaded by palm trees. Here you can kick back completely, and experience the sounds and tastes of Costa Rica: great reggae music, spicy Caribbean cuisine, and croaking bullfrogs at dusk.
Lodging is in tipis built in traditional style with hand-made materials from neighbouring indigenous communities. Inside there’s plenty of space under a palm-frond roof, and each one is simply decked out with cane furniture.
Daily life on site gently drifts between the outdoor swimming pool and the beach, where you can rent boards, take surfing lessons – Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is famed for its surfing beaches – or try your hand at snorkelling and paddleboarding. Back at camp, make the most of a high-speed wifi connection in the co-working space, join in the global book swap or catch a yoga class.
There’s a shared kitchen, but if cooking is too much like hard work, you can simply head to the restaurant instead and choose from a menu of takeaway pizza, regional favourites and homemade desserts, with artisan dark-ground coffee available all day too. There’s also loads going on after dark, with a calendar of music gigs and calypso sessions, so you can dance the night away with fellow guests from across the world.

Local attractions
Head down to the seafront and wander the trail from Playa Cocles beach to the clifftop observation point (30 minutes’ walk) for a full view of the bay. Catch some rollers, investigate the coastline on a paddleboard or hang out on a cluster of beaches, including Playa Chiquita and Playa Punta Uva (both with great snorkelling and 10 minutes’ drive)
Chances are you’ll want to get out into the jungle too. You can book organised tours into Gandoca Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge (15 minutes) to explore rainforest and mangrove swamps, plus the chance to spot turtles, manatees and dolphins. Oceanfront Cahuita National Park (20 minutes) is another trekking area, home to protected coral reef, colourful birds and rare orchids.
Learn more about Costa Rica’s endangered wildlife at the Jaguar Rescue Center (five minutes) where you can adopt sloths and big cats, and then have a potter around the arty souvenir shops in Puerto Viejo de Limón (five minutes’ drive).
