General
- Family-run site on the banks of the Nottawasaga river
- Around an hour's drive from downtown Toronto
- Outdoor pool, miniature golf, fish ladder and canoe hire on site
Fancy a holiday with a side order of history? There’s bags of it right there at the campground for folk staying at Nicolston Dam Campground and RV Park: this place was founded by John Nicol way back in 1853 and has been kept in the same family ever since.
Guests at this campground on the banks of the Nottawasaga river can still see the original dam and mill, and there are heaps of other historic places to visit with a drive of an hour or so. An hour’s drive can also take you to downtown Toronto if you’re up for urban wanderings; those who’d rather stick to rural surrounds can easily hike nearby, fish for trout or salmon at the park’s fish ladder or hire canoes, paddleboards or kayaks for days on the river.
And should you fancy a few hours relaxing on site, there are games of volleyball, miniature golf and horsehoes to play, a solar-heated outdoor pool for swims and sunbathing, and a playground to keep the tinies amused.
Evenings at Nicolston Dam are best spent in the traditional manner, gathering round the campfire; a firepit is provided on each site and there’s firewood for sale in the shop (also the place to pick up ice creams and ice bags on warmer days).
An inn is within walking distance.

Local attractions
For open-air activities, it’s just a couple of minutes’ drive to the nearest golf course, and there are walks and lake swims to be had 10 minutes away at Earl Rowe Provincial Park. If you’d like to head out by bike, a recommended route is the North Simcoe Rail Trail, along the route of an old railway line.
To get to grips with a bit of the area’s history, it’s about a five-minute drive to the Sir Fredrick Banting Homestead, or a 20-minute drive to Base Borden Military Museum to see the fab collection of aircraft and armoured vehicles. Bygone Days Heritage Village, just under an hour away, is worth a visit, as are the ships at Discovery Harbour.
Other options recommended by the Nicolston team include the town of Alliston, five minutes' drive west; the village of Cookstown (10 minutes east); Tanger Outlet Mall (15 minutes east); Barrie (25 minutes north) and Canada's Wonderland, 40 minutes to the south. Elmvale Jungle Zoo, 45 minutes away, is good for a family day out, and there’s an excellent zoo and aquarium in Toronto.
The campground has plenty of tourist info and leaflets for guests' use, and staff are happy to assist.
