Wine enthusiasts curious to explore slightly lesser known (though probably not for long…) viticultural regions should consider a holiday in Bulgaria and, in particular, at Mogilovo Hills. This luxury retreat sits about half a kilometre (a five-minute walk) from the Midalidare Estate, which produces full-bodied reds, fresh whites and sparkling wines, too. (Make sure there’s plenty of room for your wine loot, either in your luggage or the boot of your car.) Vineyard-covered hills all around might inspire you to put on your walking boots the minute you arrive, perhaps pushing as far as the Chirpan Heights (35 minutes’ drive). Your dog – a welcome guest – might be happy for the exercise. However, there’s also plenty to keep you on site, such as a sleek outdoor pool area with parasols and sun loungers, and a separate relaxation area with hanging chairs and picnic-style seating in the shade of tall trees. Meanwhile, those who need more than chirping birds and a gentle breeze to unwind head to the sauna room (with hot tub) – or to the clubhouse for a drink. The clubhouse has a communal fully equipped kitchen, and barbecue areas are scattered around the site (which also has a shop selling food essentials). However, if you would rather someone else did the cooking (and the washing up) while you’re here, try the on-site restaurant, or head into the village of Mogilovo, a 10-minute walk away.

Local attractions

In Stara Zagora (35 minutes’ drive), the Samara Flag Monument is an imposing memorial honouring the soldiers who fought in the 19th-century Russian-Ottoman War. It’s possible to delve deeper into this event at the Regional Museum of History Stara Zagora, while the Neolithic Dwellings Museum displays archaeological artefacts. If it’s antiquities you’re after, Plovdiv (an hour) delivers in spades, with a Roman forum, the ruins of an ancient stadium and the splendidly preserved Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis. The Tsar Simeon Garden Park has shaded paths and a large pool with water jets. A hill to the west of the city is topped by the huge Monument of the Red Army ‘Alyosha’. It’s worth the drive to the Central Balkan National Park (an hour and a half) to walk its shaded trails, climb the Golyam Kupen Peak for spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, and see waterfalls like Suchurum and Karlovsko Praskalo tumble down granite walls.
