  • Spacious site on the Chobe River, on the Botswana–Namibia border
  • On the edge of Chobe National Park and Salambala Conservancy
  • Good for wildlife sightings; tents for hire; braai facilities
Sitting on the border between Botswana and Namibia, on the southern bank of the Chobe River, Lorato Lodge and Camping is a pretty sweet spot for wildlife enthusiasts. Guests here benefit from being right on the outskirts of both the Kasane Forest Reserve (where you might spot elephants, buffalo and giraffes, among others) and Chobe National Park, which is home to lions and cheetahs, plus antelopes of all sorts and zebras. For the full trifecta, the Salambala Conservancy is about a quarter of an hour’s drive away, across the Ngoma Bridge into Namibia. And if all these don’t satisfy your safari requirements, they must at least come very, very close. In addition, the proximity to the river means that you might catch more than the occasional glimpse of hippos and crocodiles. Birdwatchers needn’t feel left out, either, with hundreds of species inhabiting this area, from ostriches to cuckoos and cranes. Now that you know how you’ll spend your time at Lorato, a little about this peaceful, family-friendly and secure site. Spacious pitches (many with views of the Chobe) occupy grassy spots in the shade of tall, large trees; if you’re travelling light, there are tents (plus gazebos and awnings) for hire, though you might want to ensure availability ahead of your arrival. Besides a well-maintained toilet and shower block, the site has drinking water and braai facilities, plus they can supply firewood and fresh organic vegetables for the barbecue. For anything else, the nearest shop is in the town of Kasane (45 minutes), where there are also restaurants and bars, plus tour operators arranging sunset river cruises or quad bike safaris.

Local attractions

In neighbouring Zambia, the city of Livingstone (two hours’ drive) was named after the famed Scottish explorer. The Livingstone Museum displays interesting ethnographic artefacts, plus botany and archaeological collections. Formed by the Zambezi River as it drops from a height of more than 100 metres into a narrow gorge, the Victoria Falls (two hours), on the Zambia–Zimbabwe border, make for a spectacular sight. Shaded hiking trails lead to high observation points, and there is also whitewater rafting and canoeing. The Baobab Gallery in the Savuti Plains, on the outskirts of Savuti (three hours), is an oasis of these long-lived and unusual-looking trees, which have an important spiritual meaning to local populations.
