  • Smart pre-pitched tents in the Hoge Kempen National Park
  • A 40-minute drive to Maastricht and an hour to Bobbejaanland
  • Indoor and outdoor pools and kids’ club; heating and air-con in tents
Set in Flanders countryside, Villatent at Recreatieoord Wilhelm Tell is an easy-going holiday park with masses to do all day. From luxurious, pre-pitched tents to planned activities to keep you all entertained, this is a place that’s totally geared up for family holidays. With trees dotted about the site, the smart tents each have a spacious decking area (just the spot for leisurely breakfasts or evening barbecues), air conditioning and heating. Inside, they're fitted out with decent-sized kitchens with fridge and cooker, and roomy living areas. As well as double and family bedrooms (bed linen is provided) with wardrobe space, there's also a private loo, shower and basin in a nifty bathroom. By day, life centres on the outdoor pool, which has waterslides, wave pool and fast-flowing rapids for fun-filled family days in the sun. There’s a playground for toddlers, with water fountains to splash about in, as well as an indoor pool for the odd rainy day and Jacuzzis to laze around in. Friendly reception staff will advise on day trips to local theme parks, or you can jump on bikes to cycle trails through woodland in Hoge Kempen National Park. After dark, the action moves on to the bar and restaurant, with kids’ menus and casual snacks on offer. If you fancy a family night in, order a takeaway or pick up bits for the barbecue from the handy on-site food shop.

Local attractions

The major problem here may be enticing the kids away from the wave pool. You might, however, succeed with promises of even bigger thrills on extreme coasters at Bobbejaanland theme park (an hour's drive), or treat them to a day out on the water rides at Walibi Belgium (an hour and 15 minutes). At GaiaZOO (40 minutes), they can journey from African savannah to tropical rainforest to see gorillas, lions and giraffes roaming in large enclosures. Closer to base camp, Hoge Kempen National Park is the jumping-off point for safe, car-free walking and cycling adventures (hire bikes in the park). Outdoorsy families might also like to have a go at kayaking on the Meuse river (20 minutes) or climbing indoor rock walls (30 minutes) too. For a change of pace, have a wander around medieval Maastricht (40 minutes), packed with impressive churches, flea markets and indie shops. If the young ones get grumpy, bribe them with a boat cruise down the Meuse river or let them run around on the ancient city walls.
