  • Laidback Spanish-influenced Flanders campsite among pine forests
  • Half an hour's drive to Antwerp; 20 minutes to Bobbejaanland
  • Bar, tapas restaurant, playground and kids' activities on site
The name is Spanish, but the setting is Flemish… and the two come together to create a most delightful place to stay at Camping Siesta, surrounded by the pine forests of the Antwerp Kempen five minutes from Lille (the Belgian Lille, not the French one). The Spanish influence is perhaps most noticeable in the restaurant La Cantina, which opens on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for a menu of tapas (with the costillas – ribs – a particular highlight) washed down with jugs of sangria and set to the soundtrack of a live flamenco guitarist. The laidback atmosphere gives a nod to the southern lifestyle too, and there are plenty of lovely spots where you can have a well-earned siesta while breathing in the scents of the pine trees. Much of the rest of the place is the full Flanders experience – from games of pétanque with your new neighbours to taking a walk on the trails that wind themselves through the forest next door, and of course finishing the day with a local golden beer. Kids are very welcome here, and can busy themselves clambering on the climbing frames at the playground or joining a forest safari with the site’s own woodland ranger (warning: they tend to get happily mucky on these activities, so send them off in an outfit you don’t mind getting dirty…) In between your forest forays, there are plenty of places nearby for days out – a trip to Antwerp (half an hour’s drive) is a must for many guests, and families often have a fabulous time at Bobbejaanland, 20 minutes away.

Liked: Site was clean, toilets and showers very clean but just be aware that they are unisex. Food we had (hot stone) was really good the only thing we would of liked is a copy of the menu in English

Disliked: The road was a little rough getting to it

Liked: Park, bar, paddling/ artificial sand area, woodland walk, friendly atmosphere

Disliked: Being next to the waste disposal, was not pleasant. I think the pitch is too close to it maybe create a bit more privacy from the disposal

Local attractions

Even if it’s the forest frolics that are the main focus of your holiday, you should take some time away for a trip to Antwerp (half an hour’s drive). It’s really a fabulous city, with attractions including a chocolate museum, a brewery and lots of museums, including the excellent Rubens House. Antwerp is also home to one of the oldest zoos in Europe, and a whole district of glittering diamond shops. For those of you with kids, Bobbejaanland (20 minutes) is a top day out, with lots of rides, shows and themed areas to explore. There are also lots of fun things for kids to do at De Lilse Bergen amusement park (10 minutes), or they can spend hours splashing about in the outdoor and subtropical pools at Netepark (15 minutes). If you’d rather stick to lots of outdoor time, plan things like walks in the Landschap Liereman (25 minutes) or go paddleboarding from Herentals (20 minutes).
