- Wildlife haven on a Clarence Valley sugarcane, llama and alpaca farm
- A 20-minute drive from Angourie and 40 minutes from Grafton
- Portable toilets and showers available; home-cooked meals available
What’s life like on a sugarcane farm? Well, with grinning alpacas and llamas and open greens as far as the eyes can see, life is certainly sweet at this one. Find a spot among the grassy pitches at Cardiff Alpacas, a family-friendly working alpaca farm where you can stay in the Clarence Valley among wild rivers, wetlands and mauve Jacaranda trees. And within 40 minutes’ drive of Grafton and 20 minutes of Angourie, this Harwood Island site is well within reach of several surf-heavy sandy beaches.
With 35 acres of carefully maintained pastures and shade from trees, this is a peaceful wild camping site with no toilet and shower facilities as standard. However, guests can hire portable toilets and shower units in fixed locations.
The whole family tagging along? No problem… take them along on a tour of the site and see how the farm processes alpaca fleece into products, visit the farm shop on site to pick up some local produce, and make sure all mouths are fed with a range of home-cooked meals available on site.
The village of Harwood Island itself has more opportunities to dip into the local gastronomy, with a riverside pub within five minutes’ drive. After all, it’s almost certain you’ll have worked up an appetite after a day in the area – there are plenty of places to go sailing, cycling or fishing along the river valley.

Local attractions
Is that purple rain? No, it’s just the mauve shades of the Jacaranda trees lining the streets of Grafton (40 minutes’ drive). You can see them in their full glory in See Park (40 minutes). When the craving for more jaw-dropping scenery hits, head to ‘the Scottish town in Australia’, Maclean (10 minutes), where you can fish against a backdrop of valley views.
For world-class swells, head to Angourie (20 minutes), a seaside town that's popular for surfing and fishing, and swimming in the freshwater Angourie Blue and Green Pools (25 minutes) is a rite of passage. Spooky Beach (20 minutes) isn’t as fearsome as it sounds, with a sandy stretch to unwind on.
Nearby Yamba (20 minutes) has more surfing beaches and a wander-worthy reel of sights, including Flinders Well, Yamba Lighthouse and the Yamba Historical Museum.
Although it may be further to go, the Everlasting Swamp National Park (an hour) is a rare sight worth the trip, and your best chance to glimpse rare species of birds among the wetlands.
