Pelcomb Cross Campsite: Looking north

General

  • Peaceful Pembrokeshire site in a wildlife haven just off the A487
  • A 10-minute drive from Newgale beach; 20 minutes from St Davids
  • Picnic tables on site; pub two minutes' walk and bus stop close by

Hankering after a handily located park in Pembrokeshire with fantastic countryside views? Here’s one for you: Pelcomb Cross Campsite, just off the A487 and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the amenities of Haverfordwest and the nearest beach at Newgale.

Eye up the lush nature from the pitches (some of which have a gentle slope) and look out for wildlife at the park’s pond too: it’s a popular spot for critters such as otters, herons, buzzards and red kites. There’s also plenty of space for human guests to relax, whether they’d like to chuck a ball around or just park up for a meal on one of the picnic benches.

Eats are easy to sort as firepits and barbecues are allowed at this rural site (as long as they’re kept off ground to avoid scorching) and a pub is two minutes’ walk away if you’d prefer someone else to do the cooking. A petrol station with a well-stocked convenience store and a fish and chip shop are half a mile away. If you'd like to roam without the car, it's handy to note there's a bus stop about 80 metres from the site.

As well as being close to amenities, the whole park feels safe and secure as it’s monitored by CCTV. Facilities centre around a smart modern bathroom block with underfloor heating, a couple of family-sized showers and an accessible toilet and shower. There’s also a pressurised boiler system to make sure there’s oodles of hot water for freshening up.

Please note

The park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Breed-specific legislation (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Very friendly host Chris, and excellent shower/toilet block. We had the site to ourselves due to the time of year but it is was very well kept. Really well located for Newgale Beach and St David’s. We’ll definitely stay again when we next visit South Wales.

Location was great for easy access to the beaches. Facilities were OK.

Unfortunately due to the time of year the campsite was wet each morning. We had move pitch to ensure we were in the sun in the morning to help dry the pitch.
    Pitches were very slopped

From the manager...

I'm disappointed that you felt your stay only warranted a 6 out of 10 rating. I must say that if you camp out in a tent in mid September then you have to expect dew in the mornings as well as potential rain. You did ask to move pitches which was no problem but you said that was to be on a flatter spot which s fair enough but where you moved to was in the shade in the afternoon so missing out on the sun then. I'm also disappointed that you rate our facilities as only OK. We don't advertise as having a bar/clubhouse/swimming pool or bingo hall, just a pleasant campsite with the best showerblock in Pembrokeshire (not my words). Which is exactly what you got. Our pitches are advertised as having a slope which has been measured as just 7 degrees. What you see is what you get. Also you give us 1 out of 5 for WiFI. We dont have WiFi. Also cleanliness. We are highly rated for our cleanliness so in future I'd suggest that if you do leave a review for another site please attempt to make it an accurate one instead. If you wish to discuss anything I've put here please feel free to call me.

Local attractions

Here for a beach break? Set off for Newgale with its surf schools galore (10 minutes' drive) and check out the vast sandy shores of Tenby (40 minutes) as well. This top seaside resort has several takeaways for snacking on fish and chips with a view of the sea.

If the tiddlers have had enough time with the bucket and spade, organise a trip to Oakwood Theme Park (20 minutes) to ride the rollercoasters, then admire the animals at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (25 minutes). You could also interact with more creatures by booking a beach horse-riding trip from Nolton Stables (10 minutes).

Take to the water after trotting on the sand during a visit to the Blue Lagoon aqua park (20 minutes), or dive into the Abereiddy Blue Lagoon (20 minutes), a brightly coloured pool that gets its turquoise hue from a slate bottom.

Afterwards, get out on the sea with a boat trip from St Davids, a tiny city that’s also worth dropping by for the intricately designed cathedral and Bishop’s Palace (20 minutes).
