  • Peaceful Pembrokeshire site in a wildlife haven just off the A487
  • A 10-minute drive from Newgale beach; 20 minutes from St Davids
  • Picnic tables on site; pub two minutes' walk and bus stop close by
Hankering after a handily located park in Pembrokeshire with fantastic countryside views? Here’s one for you: Pelcomb Cross Campsite, just off the A487 and less than 10 minutes’ drive from the amenities of Haverfordwest and the nearest beach at Newgale. Eye up the lush nature from the pitches (some of which have a gentle slope) and look out for wildlife at the park’s pond too: it’s a popular spot for critters such as otters, herons, buzzards and red kites. There’s also plenty of space for human guests to relax, whether they’d like to chuck a ball around or just park up for a meal on one of the picnic benches. Eats are easy to sort as firepits and barbecues are allowed at this rural site (as long as they’re kept off ground to avoid scorching) and a pub is two minutes’ walk away if you’d prefer someone else to do the cooking. A petrol station with a well-stocked convenience store and a fish and chip shop are half a mile away. If you'd like to roam without the car, it's handy to note there's a bus stop about 80 metres from the site. As well as being close to amenities, the whole park feels safe and secure as it’s monitored by CCTV. Facilities centre around a smart modern bathroom block with underfloor heating, a couple of family-sized showers and an accessible toilet and shower. There’s also a pressurised boiler system to make sure there’s oodles of hot water for freshening up. Please note that there are no electric vehicle charging points on site. If you would like to 'trickle charge' your vehicle, please speak to site staff first.

Newgale primitive grass tent campsite

Liked A three night stay with my son. The site was spot on, tidy and well cared for and the shower and toilet block was high quality and kept very clean each time we used it. There was a nice pond area my son enjoyed looking at, a nice bench on our pitch too, allowed us to enjoy some Fish and Chips and enjoy the countryside scene. Chris the owner was great, communicated details via text message, we could then arrive early evening and get straight into putting the tent up and getting settled in. Chris popped and spoke to us also the following evening, very friendly and nice to speak to. The location was great to allow us to sample the Tenby Coaster open top bus on two different days, that starts in Haverfordwest at 09:17 and returns just after 18:30, allowing us a great experience in Tenby and to take in some cracking countryside along the way. We will need to pop back here again, a nice quiet and relaxed location, we had a great nights sleep too.

Disliked Nothing, all good.

Abermawr Sunset FHU cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked Communication with owner prior to visit was excellent, seemed very helpful and friendly. Very easy to find, just off the road.
WiFi provided for free which served us well. No issues. Pub just outside of campsite was a godsend. Wonderful value and friendly staff. Dog walking area was excellent, bin provided for waste. Even with slight road noise, we had quiet nights, no noisy campers, which was great. Great being able to use our fire pit, maybe provide an honesty box of wood etc? Picnic bench was a great idea, used it lots. Roads around the small site were wide and accessible.

Disliked No contact on arriving, it was very hands off. Information about pitch was provided via text and email, so we knew where we were pitched. Saw owner speaking to other guests, didn't pop to us to check we were OK. Must have been busy?
Don't think the toilet block had been cleaned during the three nights we were there. The washing up facility does need an update, needs to be bit bigger and a bin provided for waste food scraps.
Maybe use of a swing for children would be lovely, as there wasn't much else for them to do there. Lighting around site could be added for safety when moving around after dark., though info does say bring a torch to be fair.
£5 per visitor per hour seemed a bit high, not seen this on other sites. Would benefit from some little touches, like flowers in borders and pots.

Liked Lovely site, great location, clean tidy. Views amazing. Really sheltered and nice big sectioned off pitches. Value for money. Pretty site.
Showers powerful and warm. Great little pub next-door with live band playing. Welcoming and friendly and delicious meal.

Disliked Loathed to add dislike especially as such a lovely site ( as mentioned above) however the next morning discovered dog (defo dog) poo on grass verge belonging to our pitch 29. Defo not there when we arrived and don't own a dog. Notice a few owners just letting their dogs wander.

From the manager: Hello, very pleased that you enjoyed our site but not about what you found on the edge of your pitch. Apologies for that. All dog owners who use our site are well informed that they must keep dogs on the lead and clean up after them. I would have been straight there to clear up the mess if you had told me at the time.
Thank you for choosing to stay with us,
Regards,
Chris

When coming into Pelcomb Cross from Haverfordwest, your Satnav may tell you to turn immediately by the Pelcomb Inn. This is not correct. The site entrance is 80 metres past the pub. If you are coming from St Davids, make sure to turn 80 metres before the pub. As you approach, look out for the site signs. What3words (for the main gate): before.risky.shameless.

Local attractions

Here for a beach break? Set off for Newgale with its surf schools galore (10 minutes' drive) and check out the vast sandy shores of Tenby (40 minutes) as well. This top seaside resort has several takeaways for snacking on fish and chips with a view of the sea. If the tiddlers have had enough time with the bucket and spade, organise a trip to Oakwood Theme Park (20 minutes) to ride the rollercoasters, then admire the animals at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo (25 minutes). You could also interact with more creatures by booking a beach horse-riding trip from Nolton Stables (10 minutes). Take to the water after trotting on the sand during a visit to the Blue Lagoon aqua park (20 minutes), or dive into the Abereiddy Blue Lagoon (20 minutes), a brightly coloured pool that gets its turquoise hue from a slate bottom. Afterwards, get out on the sea with a boat trip from St Davids, a tiny city that’s also worth dropping by for the intricately designed cathedral and Bishop’s Palace (20 minutes).
