  • Cosy adults-only shepherd's hut 15 minutes' walk from Manorbier
  • A 10-minute drive from Tenby and 20 from Barafundle Bay
  • Sea views from the private deck; direct access to the coast path
If this is what real-life shepherding is like, then it’d be a miracle if you got to the end of your hols without jacking it all in and signing up for a crash course in sheep keeping. The Sleeping Shepherd lifestyle (admittedly unlikely to be one that bears much resemblance to full-time animal husbandry…) is a fine one indeed, mainly involving roaming around a particularly pretty part of Pembrokeshire, chilling out on your private deck sipping wine with a sea view, and cosying up in a comfy handcrafted hut for peaceful slumbers. This peaceful little glamping site is 15 minutes’ stroll from the coastal village of Manorbier, where there’s a small supermarket, a pub and a tearoom. Folk travelling without a car can get here easily from the station 20 minutes’ amble away, and then continue local explorations by bus or with wanders on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which can be accessed on a direct footpath from the site. Walks on the coast path are highly recommended of course, as are outings to some of the area’s stunning beaches (Barafundle Bay, a frequent entrant on ‘world’s best beach’ lists, is 20 minutes away by car). But perhaps even more highly recommended are lengthy periods of hanging out on your deck, gazing out at the spectacular views over Manorbier Bay towards St Govan’s Head. A kettle, toaster and hob are in your hut so you can create some breakfast to go with the view, as is a fridge to keep the wine chilled (and the bangers, if you’re planning a barbie…).

Local attractions

No one would judge you at all if you spent your entire break on Pembrokeshire’s gorgeous beaches – there are plenty of them to pick from. Start at your local, Manorbier beach (25 minutes’ walk), or stroll to Skrinkle Haven (half an hour) before continuing along the coast path to Church Doors Cove and the sea caves at Lydstep. Jaunts further afield might take you to the resorts of Tenby (10 minutes) and Saundersfoot (15 minutes) for boat trips and some well-reviewed restaurants, or west to gorgeous Barafundle (20 minutes), Bosherston (25 minutes) for a walk past the lily ponds to the beach, or Freshwater West (25 minutes) for surfing and cracking lobster rolls from famed Café Môr. If there’s another thing that Pembrokeshire’s famed for, it’s castles… there’s one in Manorbier, and a couple of other fine examples in Carew Castle and Pembroke Castle (both 15 minutes). And although you’ve not brought kids along, who’s to say you can’t have a day out at Oakwood Theme Park (25 minutes) or cooing over the creatures at Manor Wildlife Park (10 minutes)?

Bay View shepherd's hut

Liked: Location, cleanliness, dog friendly. Very comfortable. Lovely deck/outdoor area. Friendly welcome.

Disliked: Very hot in sunshine. Quite expensive. Would be improved by having more opening windows. Outdoor bath is novel and great fun but obstructs the view (as does the hedge). Shower and toilets in need of updating but very clean.

Bay View shepherd's hut

Liked: The stunning views from the deck, the cosy hut that was really well insulated because it always felt warm, the outdoor bath. It was quiet enough to give me the tranquility I wanted, but also close enough to the small campsite and farm house for it to feel safe as a solo traveller. It was a short walk through fields to the village and the little shop. Perfect for what I wanted

Bay View shepherd's hut

Liked: We loved the sleeping Shepard. The host was welcoming and full of useful information about good places to go when we arrived. The campsite it’s self was lovely and quite for the middle of august, and from the hut we had a lovely view of the Bay.
The outdoor bath was a highlight at the hut, it felt so refreshing and relaxing.
Also having a dog with us it was nice to know We had our own fenced gated area around the hut so we could leave the doors open and the dog could play on the grass.
