  • Family park in the grounds of a manor house a mile from the coast
  • Fish for trout and salmon on the site's private stretch of river
  • Woodland, meadows, play areas, bar and TV lounge
Just lush. Take your fishing kit to Llwyngwair Manor Holiday Park near Newport in Pembrokeshire for idle days angling for trout, sea trout and salmon on a private stretch of river. The park is in the grounds of an old manor house, overlooked by the Preseli Hills and in a green and scenic setting: 'beautiful', 'fantastic' and 'stunning' are a very few of the compliments lavished on Llwyngwair Manor by former guests. It's in a spectacular setting for getting around too, as Newport and the Pembrokeshire Coast Path are a mile away, the famed sands of Fishguard are within 15 minutes' drive, and the site is in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park for weeks' worth of outdoor adventures. The fishing on site is on the banks of the Nevern river, which flows peacefully through the grounds; guests just need to bring their own kit and arrange a private fishing permit from the Llwyngwair Manor team (you'll need a valid Environment Agency licence too). And if you're not up for angling? This scenic park has loads of other stuff to get stuck into: you could meander around the grounds to seek your own serene spot among the woodland, meadows and flowering shrubs… or laze about while the kids let loose at the play areas … or cycle around the grounds… or take the kids paddling and nature spotting in the river. And after all that? Make your way to the bar for Sky TV, bar meals and a games room with pool tables and ping pong. There's an 18-hole adventure golf course on site, as well as a shuffle board and augmented reality darts. A TV lounge is also available for guests, and a family-focused entertainment programme for all ages runs during July and August and on bank holidays.

Liked The site was beautiful, flat generous pitches and open with the river right beside us. It's in a steep sided valley surrounded by trees meaning there was hardly any wind. I loved the wildlife we found and the trees were full of birdsong. I was woken by the dawn chorus every morning. The house wasn't far and we went there for a game of pool (£5) and a meal one night. The food was good and not over-priced.
The toilets, showers and washing up areas were spotless. Plenty of hot water.
We walked from the site into Newport bay which was very easy and a lovely walk. Nice cafe at the beach.
Newport village and Fishguard are lovely to explore and have a few nice shops and pubs.
WiFi was free in the house. I had a good 4G signal at the tent.

Disliked The toilet block was quite basic. No hairdryer (there was a plug in the porch area if you bring your own) and no shower gel. I also couldn't see any heaters in there so it might get quite cold.
The showers would be difficult with a toddler (you would get just as wet as the child) and I didn't see a family shower.

Changed us to hard standing pitch because of bad weather, really nice…

Liked Changed us to hard standing pitch because of bad weather, really nice grounds.

Disliked No signs for reception to check in, then all vans very close to each other. Shower facilities could do with updating.

Big static and tourer site with few tent pitches on the riverside.

Primitive grass tent campsite (solo)

Liked Nice site, very quiet but still outside main tent camping season. Lovely space next to river with walks straight from site. Clean facilities and warm showers.

Disliked On Pitchup it states that the tent pitches are maximum 2mx2m so I ended up booking a double pitch (as advised on the Pitchup website) for my 2mx4m tent. This wasn't necessary apparently but a fault of the booking site. Worth checking with actual campsite when booking.

Primitive grass tent campsite (solo)

Liked Peaceful site with flat pitches beside a small river. Toilet block clean with plenty of toilets and showers. Individual cubicles for basins was a nice touch. Hotel/bar also on the site so all their facilities are available.

Disliked Phone signal and WiFi poor where I was pitched

Local attractions

You could just roam around within strolling distance of the site and still find loads to keep you gleefully occupied for weeks: Newport, a mile away, has two beaches to explore, a boat club for trips out on the water – and several friendly pubs serving food for afterwards. You can access the Pembrokeshire Coast Path from Newport too, either east towards St Dogmaels or west towards Pwllgwaelod. The St Dogmaels route is the toughest at 14 miles (the Pwllgwaelod one is seven), but well worth it for sturdy-legged sorts as it passes spectacular sights like Witches Cauldron, Poppit Sands, St Dogmaels Abbey and the Teifi estuary; look out for porpoises and whales in the waters below this last, and seals on the beaches below Cemaes Head. Even more adventurous types can tackle local coasteering, zorbing and treetop trails; for sightseeing, Skomer Island trips and sea safaris are top picks in the area (access the island an hour and five minutes' drive south at Martin's Haven), and for families there's Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo and Oakwood Theme Park, both within 50 minutes. More gently (and grownuply), Newport Links Golf Club is under 10 minutes' drive away.
