Feeling the call to go wild camping? Set yourself down for a simple back-to-basics stay in rural Monmouthshire at Perthcretig Farm. Just as you might hope from a wild campsite, it’s a peaceful sort of place surrounded by green hilly views. There's also the pleasure of resident roe deers and other wildlife passing through: buzzards, kestrels, hares, woodpeckers, pheasants and several other native birds often pass through. The basic grass field is down a country lane about a mile from the village of Llansoy. It’s a rather scenic part of Wales, this, with the Wye Valley sitting pretty about 10 minutes’ drive to the east and the mountainous Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park just a 25-minute drive north. Come here if you’re all about outdoor living without unnecessary luxuries. The site has just portable toilet facilities, and no showers, but plenty of fresh air and – of course – the chance to lie back and look up at the stars should they make an appearance. The local pub is just a five-minute drive away from the farm (45 minutes on foot), so you're set to grab a beer or a pub meal if the idea strikes you. Any groceries for snacking on the go can be sourced in Raglan, 10 minutes’ drive away. Your dogs are welcome on site; they should like all the dog-friendly venues in Tintern (and it should be mentioned that the abbey’s also rather nice to look at…).

Liked The campsite is as described - Just perfect. Closest you can get to a true wild camp- but with nice clean toilets. Views of the woods and hills were amazing and the location as very quiet. Jo, the owner, is lovely too.

Liked very quiet and peaceful camp site we stayed just the one night to try it out as i believe it hasn't been going that long...big field ....pick your spot and pitch up its as easy as that ...the views are amazing and on the night the sky was incredible with stars i went with 4 kids from 10 to 14 and they loved it ..wild camping at its best.. porta loos were very clean and plenty of supplies including hand sanitiser. the owner jo is lovely well polite and greeted us and had a natter...if you want to do wild camping then it doesn't get much better then this and the price is great there's no limit to tents pitched up per booking (we had 3)...we will definitely be back next summer for a longer stay

Liked We had a fantastic two-night camping stay and couldn’t recommend it highly enough! We stayed as a group of 12, wild camping on the field, and had such a lovely experience from start to finish.

The location is perfect — nicely tucked away, peaceful and quiet at night, with lovely views all around. It really feels like you’re away from everything, with nothing but farm life and open fields surrounding the site, yet it’s still only a short drive or walk into town for shops and anything you might need.

There are no showers on site, which we were aware of beforehand and wasn’t a problem for us. There are portaloos around the site, which were absolutely immaculate — very clean, well-kept and clearly looked after.

Jo, the host, was absolutely lovely. Communication throughout the whole trip was brilliant. She would pop by in the evening to quickly check everything was okay and again in the morning when we checked out, but otherwise left us to enjoy ourselves and make the most of our time there.

The field itself is really well kept, and we loved the fact that everyone takes their rubbish home with them, which keeps the whole place feeling clean and respectful. The atmosphere and general vibes were fantastic from beginning to end.

We had such a great time and would DEFINITELY recommend staying here. We’d happily come back again!

Keen to explore on your own two feet? Take on the classic circular trail at The Blorenge (35 minutes’ drive), a 561-metre hill in the southeast of the Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park. More stunning walking routes weave their way across the national park, ranging from short to long. Don't overlook the Sugarloaf and Usk Valley (35 minutes), owned by the National Trust and home to dramatic walks along the Sugar Loaf and Skirrid. You could also kick off a hike at Tintern Abbey (25 minutes) on the banks of the river Wye; trails head up into the forested slopes or along old disused railway lines. Historic sites are all around this part of the country, one of the grandest being Raglan Castle (15 minutes), with its moat, gatehouse and Great Tower. The market towns of Monmouth and Abergavenny (both 25 minutes) also have plenty of historic landmarks, like castles, museums and canals. For a properly rural afternoon out for the family, set your sights on Raglan Farm Park (10 minutes). The kids can dart around the soft play areas and have a go at the go-karts, ride-on tractors or zipwires.
