  • Adults-only shepherd’s hut with views over the Brecon Beacons
  • Half an hour’s walk from Clydach Gorge and 35 minutes to the canal
  • Outdoor seating, fully-functional kitchen and private bathroom
Ever pictured yourself putting your feet up outside a shepherd’s hut and saying cheers over views of the Brecon Beacons National Park? Not yet? Well, that’s the reality at NF Glamping, a totally bespoke shepherd’s hut on a working livestock farm on the edge of the national park. With its own private toilet and shower, kitchen and a gorgeous outside area for eating alfresco-style, you have a proper set-up on your hands. Since you have the adults-only shepherd’s hut to yourself, the only visitors you’ll get are the sheep that often visit the field around the hut and new-born lambs wobbling around in the springtime. If you want to do some sniffing around the local area, Gilwern is 35 minutes’ walk away. The typical Welsh village has a few local shops, a variety of pubs, a petrol station, butchers, pharmacy and the owners’ favourite pub right next to the towpath for the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal. So, you’ll have somewhere to stretch your legs after drinks and dinner. For quieter nights in, the hut has a kitchen area equipped with a gas hob with two burners, a fridge, sink, cooking equipment and crockery. There’s cold drinking water at the sink and hot water that can be collected from the attached washing-up facilities. The rest of your hut includes full insulation, double glazing, one double bed and a dining area (and of course, seating outside too). The views from your plot are really rather excellent too and include the historic market town of Abergavenny (15 minutes’ drive), Blorenge hills (20 minutes) and Llanelli Hill (10 minutes). The hills are, of course, a hit with hikers. However, half an hour’s walk away is Clydach Gorge, another spectacular route with a river, waterfalls, beech woods, a railway line and caves.

Local attractions

You may have already been caving at Clydach Gorge, but at the Big Pit National Coal Museum (20 minutes’ drive), it’s a real coal mine that you’ll explore next. In fact, a former coal miner will arm you with a helmet, lamp, belt and battery before showing you around. Just as interesting is Blaenavon Ironworks (15 minutes), a site that once produced sulphur iron ores for the world. Back above ground, the Sugar Loaf (20 minutes) makes for a scenic walk. You might want to rest your feet a little after, and one place for that is Abergavenny (15 minutes). The town hosts events throughout the year, including a summer food festival, cycling festival, steam rally and smaller events, but there is always the historic market hall and extensive eateries to enjoy. Add some watersports to the agenda… Llangorse Lake (half an hour) has canoeing, paddleboarding, dinghy sailing or rowing activities.
