The hut and washroom in spring

  • Traditional shepherd's hut in a private garden with stunning views
  • In the Black Mountains, a 10-minute drive from Abergavenny
  • Self-catering kitchenette, woodburner, firepit and heated shower hut
A warm ‘croeso’ – that’s welcome in Welsh, for those who don’t know the local lingo – is guaranteed at Caban Bryn Arw, a shepherd’s hut set in a private garden in south Wales’ gorgeous Black Mountains on the eastern edges of the Brecon Beacons National Park. As the owners of this traditionally designed space (newly renovated in 2020) quite rightly explain, the views over the countryside are to die for. The lush landscape sets the scene for a peaceful break not far from the Monmouthshire town of Abergavenny (10 minutes’ drive). A secluded space with a spring water supply and a separate heated ‘ty bach’ – a washroom and toilet with a proper loo and hot water shower – the outside area has oak decking, so your feet won’t get muddy. The hut has a super comfy bed, plus a woodburning stove and an outdoor seating area with solar lighting, a barbecue and a firepit. In the kitchenette, there's a small fridge, a two-ring gas hob, a grill and a microwave. Secure off-road parking is provided for your car. Forget driving to start off with and make the most of the walks and cycle rides in the stunning local area (bikes are for rent on base). Wander up to the peak of the National Trust’s Sugarloaf and Usk Valley right from the hut before bounding around other bits of the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons. There are masses of footpaths, loads of wild swimming spots in the River Usk, and plenty of chances to go mountain biking and pony trekking.

Local attractions

Whether it’s renting a canoe and going for a paddle down the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal or skipping between the cafés and independent shops in the town, there’s a lot of potential for a rosy afternoon out in historic Abergavenny (10 minutes’ drive). The same can be said for a merry time in literary Hay-on-Wye (50 minutes), where there are bookshops galore (partly owing to its yearly literary festival). As for places that open up the way to some splendid natural places, Monmouth (35 minutes) is the gateway to the Wye Valley and pretty Crickhowell (20 minutes) is close to a bluebell wood - gentle walks, yes please. Those of you longing for more good-looking landscapes can find such things at Pen y Fan (an hour), the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons National Park (and a real accomplishment if you get to the top). More mountain vistas are the treat at Ysgyryd Fawr mountain (20 minutes) too… Then, of course, there are the vistas at Llangorse Lake (35 minutes), but there’s more than one way to enjoy the views… you could hire out a rowing boat, kayak, paddleboard or pedalo or simply take a loop. With bushcraft, foraging and gliding as options for activities back on land, there’s no stopping you.
