  • Disabled access and shower facilities; private hot tub and pond views
Looking to escape to South Wales for a while, but not overly keen on forfeiting all your luxuries? At less than 10 minutes’ drive from Margam in Glamorgan, family-run Blue Ponds Glamping might be the right place for you. Accommodation here is in a well-appointed and surprisingly roomy wooden pod with peaceful views over three ponds and farmland. Thoughtfully laid out with disabled access up a ramp, the pod has wide doors and a stylish interior, easily fitting in a well-equipped kitchen corner, a living area with sofa bed and dining table. It also has a double bedroom (all linens supplied) and an accessible wet room with handrails, a shower and loo. A woodburner is there for any chillier days (with a supply of kindling and firewood), and outside there’s decking with a barbecue area and a hot tub for your exclusive use. The site is designed as a quiet getaway and is not best suited to late-night party people. There are footpaths around the property, and wildlife including terrapins, ducks and moorhens make the ponds their home. If you’re lucky, you will see deer and otters in the early morning and at dusk too.

Local attractions

Energetic types can take themselves off to Afan Forest Park (40 minutes’ drive) for a day of mountain biking for all levels of proficiency on heathland tracks, far-reaching views along Gyfylchi Ridgetop Trail and strolls past abandoned mines and disused railways left over from the 18th-century coal-mining industry. When you fancy combining your scenic walk with a bit of adrenaline action, head for Margam Country Park (10 minutes), where you can stroll in woodland and explore the ruins of the abbey before whizzing over treetops zipwires at Go Ape Margam. If you have young kids with you, they’ll doubtless prefer the slides, soft-play centre and donkey cuddles at Wiggleys Fun Farm (five minutes). Other days out could include a day on Newton Beach at Porthcawl (20 minutes), where you can stretch your legs on the undulating dunes and go rock pooling at low tide. Edging Swansea Bay, Aberavon (25 minutes) is one of the longest beaches in Wales; it’s popular for watersports and is backed by a promenade with eateries, a cinema (handy for any wet-weather days) and a summertime fairground.
