  • Well maintained and secluded park with views of grassy fields
  • Less than five minutes’ drive to Valley and 10 minutes to Holyhead
  • Porth Trwyn beaches less than 15 minutes’ drive away
How does a peaceful hol in the very northern reaches of north Wales sound? If the answer’s an instant 'yes please', give Pencraig Campsite a go: it's in the Anglesey countryside on a smallholding next to a field full of ponies overlooking grassy green meadows. Pencraig Campsite has a good range of amenities, with modern toilets and showers plus a washing-up area. The sunset views are excellent from this site, creating a serene setting in which to stoke up the barbecue at the end of a day beachcombing around the lovely Isle of Anglesey. Shores within easy driving distance include Porth Trwyn and Church Bay (both 15 minutes); the latter has a café for filling up at as well as a small museum in an old thatched 17th-century cottage. For other eats, the local village of Valley is a five-minute drive from the site just off the island’s main coastal road with its pubs, takeaways, small shops and petrol station. A few bigger supermarkets are on the way to Holyhead less than 10 minutes’ drive away; come here for birdwatching too as it’s the gateway to scenic cliffside walks with the potential for puffin spotting at RSPB South Stack (20 minutes away). If you’ve brought a four-legged friend on the trip – as dogs are welcome at Pencraig Campsite – plenty of places for walkies are about, including around the colourful disused copper mine at Parys Mountain (half an hour away).

Liked: Loved the quiet location of the site and the shower facilities were lovely! It was a short drive to many of the beaches and sites in Anglesey, and the member of staff who we met on arrival was really friendly. There was also space for the kids to play football and other things, despite no specific play equipment for them.

Disliked: Our only slight negative was the washing up area. There was just one sink and it was outside, which meant it was covered in leaves and debris, and in the wet and windy weather we experienced, we really didn’t want to wash up until the weather cleared a little.

Liked: The pitch was spacious and the toilets/showers were spotless and so nice. Water was hot and the showers were lush.
Really relaxed campsite and everyone respectful and not making noise. Really reasonable price.

Disliked: Only 1 washing up sink that was outside and not very clean due to leaves etc.

Liked: Check in was so easy our info sheet was pinned up with our pitch number at the reception arrivals board. Site was round the corner and had a lovely shaded spot for our dog. Facilities were amazing, toilets were kept very clean and my boyfriend said it was the best shower he’s ever had. The site is surrounded by horses and sheep it really adds to the aesthetic of the place. No wifi but not needed there was full 4/5G signal throughout the site.

Also big thanks to the wonderful couple who helped us take down our tent as we were clearly struggling with it while our dog was having zoomies and the tent was blowing away in the wind, it must have been hilarious to watch.

Can’t wait to come back.

Disliked: There was nothing if I was being pedantic I think there was a mention of a shop or a cafe. There were some huts that were closed but this really wasn’t an issue for us.

Liked: We absolutely loved this campsite and can’t wait to be back!

It was lovely and quiet, we had pitch 27 which was perfect for us. As it was in the corner near the horse field and out of the way from everyone. The toilets were so clean and tidy and the showers were also immaculate!

It was so quiet at night too! Hardly any noise. It was just so peaceful. A very chilled bank hol weekend!

The beach also was lovely that was so close to the site!

Disliked: The only thing I was a bit disappointed with was the little shop not being open! As I’d of love to of tried a milkshake! 🤣

Local attractions

Anglesey has numerous beaches to comb, including the quiet bay of Rhoscolyn (15 minutes' drive away) with calm, shallow water for paddling or kayaking and Traeth Llydan (20 minutes), a wide, sandy stretch of coastline. Llanddwyn Island is 45 minutes away – visit at low tide to reach it via the sand. For age-old history in between submerges in the sea, the Neolithic-era Barclodiad y Gawres burial chamber is 15 minutes’ drive away and the Bryn Celli Ddu Burial Chamber takes 25 minutes to reach for investigating Wales’ prehistoric history. Slightly more recent heritage can be had on tours of Beaumaris’ castle and old jail; the pretty seaside village is also tiptop for shopping in small independent boutiques and filling up in traditional pubs. Off Anglesey, about an hour and five minutes’ drive away, is the base of Wales’ biggest mountain, Snowdon. If your legs are feeling up to it, hike to the summit – or just take the train…
