  • Dog-friendly site on the edge of Eryri/Snowdonia National Park
  • A five-minute drive from Aberdyfi, Tywyn and the Talyllyn Railway
  • Beaches, shops, restaurants and cafés five minutes' drive
A little of the mountains, a lot of beaches and a sprinkling of steam trains – that should suffice as a short summary for a getaway at Vaenol Farm Caravan Park on the very edge of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia). Just a five-minute drive from the seaside towns of Tywyn and Aberdyfi, this is a sweet spot for outdoor adventures indeed… Twyn is a splendid little spot for some seaside pottering. Firstly, it has a safe, sandy swimming beach with a promenade and a recreation ground with bowls, miniature golf, tennis courts and a play area. It's also home to the Talyllyn Railway, whose steam trains have been puffing around the national park since 1865. Just off Twyn's high street, there’s an indoor swimming pool, a fully equipped gym and a sports hall, as well as a cinema – handy for rainy-day activities. The town's shops also come in handy for sourcing supplies, and there are restaurants and pubs for a good meal and beer. From Vaenol Farm Caravan Park, you may want to walk along the four-mile sandy beach all the way to Aberdyfi or take the five-minute drive to go crabbing from the jetty. In town, local boats run sea fishing trips; alternatively, cast off directly from the beach. The town also has an 18-hole championship links golf course, and you can learn to sail or windsurf at Dovey Yacht Club. Whichever outing you choose, back at base you'll be able to clean up at the smart modern bathroom block; guests also have access to a launderette, washing-up area and Elsan point so you can keep all your kit in good order.

What customers say

This tidy campsite has spotless facilities and large, flat pitches, often with ocean or mountain vistas. Guests loved the handy location, a short stroll to town and shops, and praised the welcoming, obliging staff. Though mostly clean, a few noted inconsistent shower temps and cleaning. Wind can be a concern. Great value, highly recommended.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Flat pitch with nice views. Clean toilets and showers but too far away from tent field

Disliked The fact they knew large groups were coming to camp ahead of the "race the train" event at the steam railway. They were playing loud music and singing loudly until well after midnight. Spoke to the owner of the site when we arrived and she admitted this happens every year. She should not be hiring the site out to the general public and charging us good money knowing this is happening. Others staying here said the same as us this morning.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Second time I've stayed here. It's a very nice, clean and quiet campsite. Lots of space. Really nice staff there. Clean toilets and showers. Just out of the town so close to shops and public transport. For hikers like me its easy to get to Cader, Dolgoch, Panorama, Bird Rock from Tywyn for days out and a have a nice basecamp to return to for a hot shower.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We decided to spend our first ever camping trip with a tent at Vaenol Farm, and we were welcomed with absolutely huge pitches — two massive areas for tents with level, neatly cut grass. The toilets and showers were big, spacious, and provided warm water. The “kitchen” was more of a dishwashing room, with four sinks offering warm water.

There was also an activity room with a billiards table, an air hockey table, and table football. We saw a laundromat, though we didn’t need to use it, and we also didn’t get a chance to try the Wi-Fi, so we can’t really comment on that.

The site is easy to access, with the reception located right at the front of the pitches.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We had a fantastic stay at Vaenol farm. The facilities were excellent and have clearly improved a lot since our last visit about a year ago.

Everything was clean, tidy, and well-maintained. The groundsman was incredibly helpful and always busy making sure the site looked its best — his hard work really shows and his hospitality clearly makes him a hit with the more regular visitors to the site.

The manager was equally wonderful — friendly, polite, and very accommodating, making us feel welcome from the moment we arrived.

A big thank you to the whole team for creating such a well-run and pleasant place to stay. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

Local attractions

Want to take in the gorgeous Welsh coast from the comfort of a train carriage? The Cambrian Coast Railway departs from Aberdyfi (five minutes’ drive), travelling up Cardigan Bay towards Aberystwyth and taking in gorgeous cliffs. On the railway, it’ll take around 40 minutes to reach Barmouth, a stunning spot for paddleboarding, sea kayaking or wandering between the town’s museums, cafés and ice cream parlours. King Arthur's Labyrinth (half an hour) is a fine choice for a day of legend-telling in the national park’s mountains. A boatman will guide you underground to a waterfall, and there’s also a Welsh deli selling produce like Welsh honey, ciders, eggs and cheeses for your picnic. Meanwhile, for those mountain hikes, Penygader, one of the Welsh three peaks and 893 metres high, is a 25-minute drive away. If you're still raring to go on another stroll, get onto the coastal path or try the trails at the Dolgoch Waterfalls, 15 minutes’ drive away.
