  • Family-friendly site with sea views, 100 metres from the promenade
  • A 15-minute walk from Barmouth beach; 25 minutes to the town centre
  • Playground and a shop on site; on National Cycle Route 8
Just 100 metres from the sea, Hendre Mynach Caravan and Camping Park is a rather splendid base for a break in north-west Wales. This family-friendly site is a five-minute stroll from Barmouthā€™s promenade, and sandy Barmouth beach is a pleasant 15 minutesā€™ walk away ā€“ or a quick ride on the small land train that travels up and down the promenade. When youā€™re not sea fishing from the shore, taking a peaceful paddle or watching the kids bounce on the trampolines on the beach, head to Barmouth Harbour (half an hourā€™s walk), the departure point for boat trips and off-shore fishing. An amusement park and leisure centre are other entertainment options in town, where foodies will find plenty of cafĆ©s and restaurants. Hendre Mynach Caravan and Camping Park is a convivial spot: families, couples, friendly bikers and rallies (outside of peak season, please) are all welcome, as are backpackers and solo travellers (at a discount during low season). Thereā€™s a playground for the kids, and keen cyclists are also catered for: National Cycle Route 8 runs past the site. Itā€™s well equipped too, with water on all pitches, washing-up facilities and a free and modern shower block with shaver points, hairdryer and straighteners. Thereā€™s also a launderette, baby-change facilities with a baby bath, Elsan waste disposal points, a drive-on motorhome drain, tarmac roads and CCTV. Helpful staff are available 24 hours a day, gas and wifi are sold at reception, and thereā€™s a shop on site, plus a local bus stop nearby.

Liked: We liked the proximity to the beach and the flat pitch. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Lighting wasn't working initially but that was good.

Disliked: More toilets would be good , as it's a long walk to either if you're down the beach end.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Pitch was right by railway crossing to get straight onto promenade.

Disliked: Toilet/shower block quarter of mile away. Tired, dated, cubicle door in gents wouldnā€™t lock. Very steep heading in and out of park.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to post a review People that know and come back to us time after time are probably very bemused by your distancing (even quarter of a mile is only 375 Metres or thereabouts - and the pitches after where you were located aren't even that far away from the toilet block) - you were approximately 160 Metres from the toilets / showers ! One of Our toilet blocks is in the planning process to be fully revamped but in the meantime my staff work hard in order to make sure they are clean and ready for use. I will send a member of staff to make sure all locks are working as nothing has been reported to ourselves. As to our entry / exit - steep?, nowhere near as steep as many roads in wales.

Local attractions

The burial site of Cors y Gedol (10 minutesā€™ drive) dates from about 4000 BC. Not much is left of the original stone mound, but the sea views alone are well worth the hike, plus you can push on to climb the slopes of Moelfre from here. If mountains are your thing, check out Penygader (35 minutes) and Snowdon (50 minutes), Walesā€™s highest peak. Got your mountain bike with you? Coed y Brenin Forest Park (half an hour) has eight purpose-build trails catering to all abilities and a skills area to practise your bunny hops, plus hiking paths taking in ruined copper mines, viewpoints and waterfalls. Speaking of which, at Dolgoch Falls (45 minutes), forested trails take you up close and personal to the cascades. At the Italianate-style village of Portmeirion (35 minutes), elegant architecture, pastel-coloured houses and lush subtropical gardens will have you believe youā€™re in Portofino. Stop for afternoon tea and donā€™t forget to buy some pottery.
