  • Family-run site seven miles from Snowdonia National Park
  • Anglesey 10 minutes' drive; Zip World Penrhyn Quarry 20 minutes
  • Communal barn with games and campfire; shops nearby
Rummaging around for a dog-friendly base that’s wild and peaceful? Seven miles from the edge of Snowdonia National Park, a warm Welsh welcome awaits at Cae Lal, a family-run site 10 minutes’ drive from Anglesey and 20 from Zip World Penrhyn Quarry. The field is packed with wildlife and character – think birds calling, frogs and butterflies doing their thing and the occasional hare jumping… This marvellously marshy landscape has the national park as its backdrop. Pitches are mown in a circular shape, and there’s ample space between each pitch, meaning that there’s plenty of privacy. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to come and stay, as long as they’re kept on a lead. You might walk away with a new friend or two too (not just of the furry kind). The site has a communal modern barn area, which is insulated and filled with games, books, electrical sockets and sofas so all can chill out and mingle. On dry evenings, a bonfire is lit outside the barn just in time for sunset. There’s also a gorgeous woodland near the barn with dreamy stone walls, steps and paths. Another big bonus is the on-site wild spa (available for an additional fee), which has a woodfired hot tub, woodfired sauna, a cold plunge pool and a holistic therapy cabin. Got the kids with you? They might want to play using the site’s natural resources: den-building or making hedgehog houses and bug hotels, perhaps? This site is also well-located for family bike rides. If you want to source some snacks for the journey, there’s a supermarket five minutes’ drive from the site. The facilities on site include clean, well-designed composting toilets and flushing toilets, a washing-up area and stylish showers that have been stocked with locally made eco-friendly products.

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The facilities ie showers, wash area, even the eco toilets which is a lot better than using portaloos at ‘wild’ camping sites.

Nice pitch sizes, with enough space from other pitches and the night we stayed was very quiet.

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite (large)

Liked The campsite was beautiful and very tranquil, with well laid out pitches.
The showers and toilets were exceptionally clean and the children loved the 'shed' which was a games room, a place to chill out and had facilities like a fridge, kettle, microwave that could be used by residents.
Very friendly and helpful owners and we loved the resident dogs too!

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The wide open spaces where the kids could play and make friends with other children playing on the site. The quiet nature of the site and the spacing of the pitches makes for a very serene experience.

The eco shower, toilet and wash up facilities are far better than I have experienced on many non-eco campsites, and they are regularly cleaned. And the included shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and soaps are a bonus.

Dotty the dog was a huge hit with the kids also.

There is no Wifi on site, which personally I see as a plus, but a strong 4g signal was available.

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite

Liked What a beautiful campsite. Absolutely loved the eco friendly touches, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel in the showers. The site itself was really pretty and it had such a calming effect. Loved the communal fire pit in the evenings. Everyone was so friendly and accommodating. Would highly recommend. Close to shops and not to far from Snowdonia. We will definitely be returning next year. Myself and my partner had a massage from Elen. It was just what we needed after a stressful week. Elen is fantastic!!!
Thank you so much.

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite (large)

Liked Nice quiet campsite, pitch felt very private as there is a “grass wall” around you. The pitches were very level which was great too. Showers and toilets were nice and clean with the option of normal loos if you do not like compost ones. All shower products were provided as it is an eco friendly camp. It was very quiet at night and there aren’t many pitches so was pretty quiet during the day too. There’s a communal area with pool table and other amenities such as a fridge, microwave etc. Lastly it was an 3 minute drive to Tesco! Overall just a lovely little campsite.

Disliked Only downside is that the car park is near the shower blocks so you cannot park next to pitch. Wasn’t a big issue at all, they provide wheelbarrows to take your belongings from the car to the pitch.

Meadow primitive grass tent campsite (large)

Liked Bethan (owner) is so welcoming, hard working and is an absolute joy. Very helpful on every occasion we needed guidance.
Camp site is perfectly located for a peaceful escape and also central to all things adventure and beautiful beaches.
Campsite is very clean, well maintained and everything is accessible. Showers are lovely and wonderful products provided. Washing up area is clean, good water pressure with hot and cold water.
Piches are great, offer seclusion and again well maintained. There is some fabulous looking glamping belltents - looked incredible, furnished and plentiful room for gathering with larger families or friends.
It's a very economic friendly campsite - you need to recycle, has compost loos ( and some flushing)
They style of the showers, loos, sinks etc is really fitting to the surroundings.
One of my favourite things was walking to the communal area on an evening where the grass pathways was lit with solar lights ... so so pretty and enchanting.
Communal area is just perfect ! Lovely comfortable seating/sofas. Electric kettle, fridge, toaster etc as well as a pool table. We sat in there on our last night charging our phones, bottle of wine, cheese and biscuits having a great time- very chilled atmosphere and so relaxing. Fire pits available are great and there is a huge communal one roo with seats around. Absolutely everyone has been respectful, polite and a pleasure to be with and around.
Phone signal has been fine, no issues at all.
We have done lots in our few days. Campsite is great location for Snowdon and lots of the adrenaline activities. Also beaches within easy travel distance.
Overall absolute great Campsite. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to visit and explore this part of Wales.

Disliked Nothing.

Local attractions

Kick off your escape with a bit of adrenaline, which is exactly what you get on the 500-foot zipwire that hangs over the slate quarry at Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (20 minutes’ drive). The climbing centre in Caernarfon (15 minutes) will add to the heights-themed activities, except you might first get carried away nosing around the town’s 13th-century castle. Slate was once a booming industry around here, which is something you’ll get to know at the National Slate Museum in Llanberis (15 minutes). Llanberis and the former slate quarrying village of Bethesda (15 minutes) are both gateways into the national park… but first, Llanberis has heritage trails for you to tackle before the big national park paths (or a steam train if you don’t fancy walking just yet). When it comes to gorgeous coastal spots, first on your list should be Bangor (10 minutes’ drive), with its pleasure pier, and Anglesey’s beaches and coastal paths (10 minutes).
