  • Family-owned Snowdonia site near the shore of Bala Lake
  • A short walk to watersports, boat hire and Bala Lake Railway
  • Within walking distance of Bala’s shops, restaurants and golf course
Got Snowdonia National Park in your sights? You can add a little sailing or windsurfing – and relaxation on a family-run site – into the mix when staying at Pen Y Bont Touring and Camping Park. This peaceful place is just a few hundred metres from the shore of Bala Lake (also known by its Welsh name Llyn Tegid). The fresh air of the Snowdonia National Park is sure to aid that well-awaited relaxation… and when you’re feeling fully rejuvenated (and full of tasty food from the shops and restaurants in Bala town centre, 15 minutes’ walk away), there are activities like sailing, windsurfing and boat hire around the lake. Switch up Bala Lake’s gentle ripples for the whitewater of the Tryweryn at the National White Water Centre, 10 minutes’ drive away. Adventurous souls can zoom down the 1080-metre zipwire at Zip World Llechwedd (40 minutes’ drive), climb Snowdonia’s mountains or catch a few swells at the surf lagoon at Adventure Parc Snowdonia (50 minutes). If you’d rather move at a more leisurely pace, putting a few holes as you go, there’s a golf course on the other side of Bala, half an hour’s walk away from the site. Spa days and massage treatments are available about 10 minutes' walk away too.

What customers say

Pen Y Bont Caravan Park gets kudos for great, modern facilities, spotless washrooms, and friendly staff. It's in a beautiful spot with roomy pitches, near Bala Lake and town. Guests love the peaceful vibe, tidy grounds, and handy shop. Most recommend it, though some note road noise on certain pitches and spotty WiFi.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite (medium)

Liked It is well kept site

Disliked This was the dearest site we have ever stayed on, it's a small footprint with lots of pitches, we booked an xl pitch but personally was the smallest pitch we have ever had, compared to other fully serviced pitches. Not much to do around the area, the lake looks nice but no seats/viewpoints/picnic spots. No large supermarkets near so be prepared to pay max prices in the town shops. Chippy was nice but card only. Our experience felt cramped along with kids zooming along on bikes everywhere, pulling wheelies as no areas for them to play in. We did leave a day early.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We always wonder why guests leave us negative feedback regarding the price of the site as you knew the price when booking, so if you felt it was too dear, why not look for somewhere else?
We are only a small site but the pitches are evenly spaced with lots of grass areas scattered in between.
We have to disagree with your comment stating that there is not much to do in the local area; we are within an hour's drive of most major attractions, we have watersports galore for the thrill-seekers and beautiful lakes, waterfalls and walks to explore. The lake has lots of benches and picnic spots - if you were to pop into Reception we could have pointed you in the direction of our favourite places to enjoy too.
The major supermarkets are a 45mins drive away but online deliveries can be organised to bring your groceries straight to your pitch. Alternatively there are 2 convenience shops in town along with local greengrocers and butchers too - it is up to guests to research where they are staying and not to mark us down as a site for things that are out of our control.
Visiting us in the Summer holidays inevitably means that there will be a high volume of kids on site as we are a very popular holiday destination for families.

Sorry to hear you won't be visiting us again or recommending us to your friends, but hopefully any future guests won't be deterred by this review.

8M FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Pretty much everything, location, cleanliness, by the lake, walking distance to the town, close to the railway, lovely pitch and great friendly staff

Disliked Bit noisy at night with people playing music past 10 o’clock, this may seem early but when you’ve got a young baby who’s been woken up by the noise it’s not, the staff however checked this out but by 1030pm the music had stopped.
The other thing which wasn’t the best was teenagers flying around on their bicycles at full speed, I saw two infants nearly got run over being pulled back by their parents

Quiet time is from 10:30pm so I'm glad everything quietened down by then, there is always an emergency number on the front door of Reception if things carry on too late into the night, with the warden living on site, they are always on hand if needed.

Liked Very scenic site. Wonderful friendly staff who really care. The site is fantastic and so close to the lake which made it ideal for our water-mad Border Collie. The extra activities arranged by the staff were excellent. Short walk to the town. Overall a great place to pitch up.

Disliked Not enough showers and too early bin collection on one morning.

Lili Prospector Castle ready tent

Liked We had a fantastic time, the campsite was really well run it was clean, peaceful and the staff were kind helpful and friendly.

The location was great, we had fun on the Lake Bala steam train, although there isn’t much to do at the other end we enjoyed a walk and found a lovely pub where we stayed for a fantastic Sunday Lunch. The next day we enjoyed a more relaxed day including a swim in the lake. Then on our final day drove a short distance to Zip World. There were other things we would’ve loved to do which is why we’re heading back next year.

We travelled with our two boys aged 7 and 9 and really enjoyed ourselves, it was a much needed family break. With the campsite and the local area being so dog friendly next year we’ll be bringing our bouncy cockapoo along too.

From the manager: Thank you so very much Naomi! This is our dream review - to know that you enjoyed everything that Pen Y Bont and Bala have to offer - and even better to know that you have already booked to return in 2026! 😊

Local attractions

For those days where you can’t be bothered to walk too far, it’s very handy that the station for the narrow-gauge Bala Lake Railway is just five minutes’ walk away. Views of the water are a given, but count the mountains too: Arenig Fawr, Aran Fawddwy and Aran Benllyn are visible on the route. You may have your sights set on climbing Wales’ tallest mountain, perhaps. If you’re not climbing up Snowdon (an hour's drive) yourself, you might want to take the Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes), which has been making its ascent for over 100 years. A less strenuous trail than the Snowdon climb is the Mawddach Trail, which runs for just under 10 miles from Dolgellau (half an hour), crossing over the gorgeous Barmouth railway bridge on the other end. Coed y Brenin Forest Park (35 minutes) has plenty of trails too, through thick forest this time. You can take them on by mountain bike, standard bicycle or on foot – and there’s bike hire at the forest park.
