  • Small hilltop glamping site with views over the Clwydian Range
  • At the base of Penycloddiau; Offa's Dyke Path within walking distance
  • Eco-friendly energy sources used; firepits and barbecues welcome
Hatching a plan for a holiday in North Wales? At Logfire Holidays, you’ll be in for firepits over starry skies (a telescope is available to borrow on request), hiking in the footsteps of an old king and picking between beaches, mountains and the countryside. With a hilltop position and views over the Clwydian Range, fabulous scenery is a given and when conditions are cloud-free, the dark skies make for splendid stargazing (over a firepit or a barbecue, perhaps?). This glamping site has a host that cares. Hence, the site has a full set of eco-friendly credentials: low-carbon air source heat pumps, solar-powered electricity and an electric vehicle charger for guests who need it. The goal is to minimise power and water consumption, so they encourage quiet, back to basic breaks. That’ll be quite easy indeed, given the peaceful rural atmosphere. Eves might be spent around the firepit or barbecue, doing plenty of stargazing of course, and days might involve hiking or cycling in the surrounding landscapes. At the base of Penycloddiau (it takes 45 minutes or so to hike to the top) and within walking distance of the Offa’s Dyke Path, there are a fair few choices for hikes. There are free-range hens roaming around the site’s field and orchard. Facilities-wise, there’s a shower and toilet in the nearby building and a small honesty shop for basics; food packages can also be organised if you request them in advance. Caerwys, a 45-minute walk or a five-minute drive away, also has a pub, café, shop and a pizza takeaway.

Emily Rose shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful location, beautifully appointed shepherd's hut and excellent value. Really liked the intention of the hosts to make the site as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible, and appreciated their friendliness. Also appreciated having good walks from the door. Loved having the company of the hens at breakfast - and relaxing on the swing and in the hammock.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for the note you left in the hut - my work trip was very rewarding thank you. We really appreciate the care you took of the shepherd's hut during your stay and your comments relating to the eco / sustainability elements of the site here which we will constantly be working to improve. Delighted that you found the relaxation you were looking for.

Emily Rose shepherd's hut

Liked: We recently had the pleasure of staying in this lovely Shepherd's hut nestled in the heart of some of the most stunning scenery we have ever seen. As soon as we arrived, we received a warm welcome from Nicola, who gave us a tour of the property and even brought us some fresh milk to go with the lovely welcome pack already left in the hut. Nicola was always just a text away and did everything she could to help out, even offering to post my girlfriend's earrings she had forgotten after we left. The Shepherd's hut itself was beautifully decorated and had everything you could possibly need for a relaxing stay. From the comfortable bed to the cozy log burner, every detail had been thought of to make us feel right at home. A highlight of our stay was the lovely walks in the area, which allowed us to take in the spectacular views and get out and about in the sun. Nicola was also incredibly helpful in providing recommendations for local attractions, activities, and pubs, which helped us make the most of our stay. We would highly recommend this Shepherd's hut to anyone looking for a unique and relaxing experience.

Disliked: Nothing.

Finch gypsy wagon

Liked: Absolutely everything. We stayed in Finch which is the traditional gypsy caravan. It's quaint, beautifully redone and more spacious than you first imagine. The toilet and shower facilities are a 2 minute walk across the gardens, here you also find kettle & toaster etc. We ordered the BBQ package and 2 breakfast packages for our 3 night stay and the food was amazing, local, fresh and really high quality. Breakfast packages were so huge we had enough for hiking lunches. There are BBQs on site plus the fire pit for use without additional charge but we'd brought our camping stove. On site is also the old bakery/barn where you can buy firewood, jams, eggs and apples, I really recommend you grab a jam, they do come in the breakfast boxes but it's the most delicious extra fruity jam I've had in years. Nicola was away for our visit but contactable via phone (we got a little lost on our way up the hill, totally our own fault as the instructions were clear, we just got carried away by scenery and walk planning. Nicola's Mum, Rosemary was on site and very helpful, she gave us a tour of where everything was and checked in daily when she saw us out and about. I'm sure there were people in the rental cottage but the nature and layout of the site are such that you felt like you were there alone. No car noise, the occasional farm sound, just nature and peace. Locally there is so much to do, the walk over to the Dinorban Arms is a great one, there's lots of little hikes and larger ones on the doorstep or less than 20 minutes away. It is possible to get a taxi, costs include the coming out fee but we found that really reasonable (hike down to Dinorban & taxi back after a couple of pints!) Or, just sit and enjoy the scenery, especially the stars!! All said I cannot wait to revisit this site, it's out of this world amazing.

Disliked: Nothing at all! Not booking for longer maybe

From the manager: Thank you, Hannah, for taking time to leave such a detailed review. I am sorry that I didn't meet you personally and am so pleased that you enjoyed all aspects of your stay and your tip for other guests with regard to the walk to the Dinorben with a taxi back is a great tip!. It was really good to get feedback on the food packages as it helps to know that they felt like good value. Lastly may I thank you for taking such good care of the wagon during your stay - it was greatly appreciated. We hope to see you here again one day in the future.

Liked: Location beautiful, gypsy caravan and amenities clean. Good host.

Disliked: Bed is a squeeze for two adults but slept well.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave your honest review. I have asked Pitchup to add some wording to reflect the size of the bed platform more accurately, It is a queen sized memory mattress which is full length but a little narrower than a double mattress. You definitely need to be good friends in this space :) I am so pleased you both enjoyed your stay and look forward to welcoming you back. Thank you for adding your photos too!

Talacre beach (25 minutes’ drive) has a peaceful seafront, and on a stroll down to the Dee estuary, you might be lucky enough to spot birds like skylarks or warblers. Prestatyn beach (25 minutes) has a livelier scene; get stuck into surfing or sailing there. With Snowdonia National Park accessible from 35 minutes’ drive, you’re in store for mountain scenery, steam railways and adrenaline-inducing activities. Just block in some time to visit Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes) and Adventure Parc Snowdonia (50 minutes). You may not be on a city break, but a city day trip is well within your reach since Chester (40 minutes) and Liverpool (an hour and 10 minutes) are within driving distance. As for those of you who’d like to see some remnants of times gone by, the National Trust’s Bodnant Garden (40 minutes) is a Grade I-listed building and Gwrych Castle (half an hour) is a 19th-century house. Rhuddlan (20 minutes) is a castle that has been standing since the 1200s. And for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Conwy (35 minutes) has a 13th-century fortress and ancient walls.
