  • Peaceful, family-run site close to walking paths in the Clwydian hills
  • A 10-minute drive from Ruthin and 15 from Loggerheads Country Park
  • Wooded area for den building and a stream; firepits for hire
If you’re thinking of taking a countryside trip but still want to whizz back and forth to a town, cast your eye over the family-run Camping Minffordd. It may be in the rural Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but it’s also less than a 10-minute drive from Ruthin’s restaurants, pubs and supermarkets. A tearoom and an inn are about a mile away for finding food on foot as well, but many people prefer to cook up meals on site – barbecues are allowed, firepits are for hire and wood is available to buy – while letting the kids build dens in the woodland area and paddle in the pretty stream. Stock up on ingredients in Ruthin or pre-order one of the park’s local produce boxes by getting in touch via the contact details sent to you with your booking. Dogs are welcome to holiday at Camping Minffordd as well, so walkies are to be had along local paths, including up to the highest peak in the area, Moel Famau, or along the famed Offa’s Dyke route. Cycling trails are nearby too and creative types who prefer using their hands over stretching their legs might like to swing by a popular craft centre that runs a programme of activities and exhibitions (ask on site for details).

Local attractions

North Wales is a land of mountain biking trails, historic castles, fab food and adventure centres, so applying the phrase ‘there’s something for everyone’ to this area is by no means an exaggeration. Stop off in Ruthin first, a historic market town (10 minutes’ drive), to try the grub in the restaurants, pubs and tearooms before exploring the old gaol then venturing a little further to roam around Rhuddlan Castle (half an hour). Travel a touch further to the coast next – Rhyl (35 minutes), in the very north of north Wales, has a long sandy beach for the kids to play on. Rather stick to the local landscape? Loggerheads Country Park (15 minutes) is home to a wood-covered valley tracing the River Alyn and has views of the mighty Moel Famau peak. Alternatively, head west for Llyn Brenig (half an hour), a fishing lake 1,200 feet high up in the Denbigh Moors, or zoom towards the Zip World Slate Caverns (an hour) in Snowdonia National Park and zipline across a disused quarry.

Eli bell tent

Liked: Location - close to lots of tourist attractions and the town of Ruthin.
Safe space for children to play.

Disliked: Site was not a quiet and peaceful site (well on a Bank Holiday Weekend) and there were far more than the quoted 7 tent maximum capacity. So we actually left a day early as the one shower and two toilets ws not enough for the number of people on site.
Owners, were not helpful and we were left waiting over 30 mins for someone to arrive to check us in, as nobody answered the phone numbers on site. Then we were left feeling like an inconvenience and were not shown any facilities etc. It took us until the second day to find the freezer and second toilet.

Toilets and single shower were not clean, although at least there was toilet paper.

Disliked the fact the description stated outdoor furniture was provided and all you needed to bring for the Eli Bell Tent was towels and your cooking equipment. Truth was only two sun loungers were provided for four guests and we had to dash out and buy chairs and a table, when annoyingly had the description been correct we could have brought our own with us. Bizarrely the other Bell Tent came with a nice table and chairs and fire cooking tripod, despite both being charged at the same rate.

Also disliked the fact we paid for a glamping experience and were in a field with other general campers pitched up around us. By far the worst site I have ever been to for general camping or glamping and would not recommend to others sadly. It ruined a trip home to North Wales for our family to go and visit family and friends and we ended up sleeping on the floor of a friend so that we could at least have access to a clean shower and toilets come the morning.

From the manager: Sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. It is a shame that you didn't mention any of the issues whilst we were here as we had another table and chairs we could have put up (I think we mentioned a table to you on the Sat evening when providing payment details, but it didn't seem like you wanted it - maybe we miss-read your response). The two toilets and shower are all in one block and all were in use throughout the weekend by the 9 families camping with us. If these were not to the standard expected I can only apologize, we normally pride ourselves on keeping them clean (even if they are not the most modern) so I'm not sure what went wrong this weekend - as you can see, we have an average of 5/5 for cleanliness so must have missed something on this occasion. The only other time we have had a complaint at the site we have managed to resolve this and also offered a refund as we could see there was an issue, we would have been happy to do the same here had you discussed this with us. Sorry again for spoiling your trip and I do hope you did manage to spend some enjoyable time with your friends and family.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Friendly site, owner very helpful and kind, small number of pitches allowed, clean facilities, extra field that the owner let us use for dogs to play in, small but clean toilet/shower.

I would recommend this site for those with young children.
During my stay most tents had a number of young kids who played in the middle of the field. This is great if you have your own kids with you as its an enclosed field and feels very safe to be able to let them run around freely but perhaps would not recommend for those wanting a quiet peaceful evening.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The owner literally saved our camping trip seeing as we didnt have any tent poles! Lent us his 6 man tent which we were obv very grateful for.
We also hired a fire-pit and a bag of wood - 10.00 and really made the trip as we made shmores and spent quality time together.
Stayed with 13,11 and 7 year olds - nothing available at the camp but we knew this, it was purely a base for us to climb Moel Famau in the morning and then chill here afterwards.
Toilet was always clean and there was a shower but we didnt use this as only stayed one night. We ate at a pub close-by - The Griffin Inn which we would also recommend as it was really delicious and very friendly staff.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Welcoming host, brilliant views, clean facilities. A playarea and woodland area for children to keep children busy, plus the river is only a short walk through the adjoining field. A freezer and WiFi are available to guests, and fire pits can be hired for a small fee. Host was brilliant, really welcoming and checked in with us a few times offering local information. We are already planning a return trip next year!
