  • Peaceful grass pitches at Llanrwst, bordering Snowdonia National Park
  • A 10-minute drive to Zip World Fforest and Adventure Park Snowdonia
  • Groups, dogs and kids welcome; showers and communal campfires on site
At Popcorn Camping Nant Conwy in North Wales, you are guaranteed two things: one, the pitches are flat, for this is the home of Nant Conwy Rugby Football Club. And secondly, the site is on the edge of Snowdonia National Park, and it’s flanked by mountains, so wherever you camp on the field, the views will be just gorgeous. Set just outside the small town of Llanrwst in the heart of the Conwy valley, the site is only open during the rugby off-season. If you’re travelling with friends or family, the spacious pitches are allocated on arrival, so you will get to camp all together, and car parking is by the pitches, so you won’t need to lug heavy camping gear across the rugby field. The site offers the following facilities in the clubhouse: hot showers, loos and dish-washing points, and there are drinking-water taps around the camping field. A few rules and regs: quiet time is from 10:30pm until 8am, so everybody can get a decent night’s sleep. Barbecues are allowed next to your tent as long as they are off the ground – there’s a communal campfire for everyone to use. Finally, dogs are welcome on site, but must be kept on a lead at all times – and please don’t let them run off into the clubhouse.

Local attractions

Historic Llanrwst (five minutes’ drive) is well-worth a peek for its two 17th-century chapels, one of which holds the stone coffin of medieval King Llywelyn the Great. It’s also got a bunch of pubs, takeaways and restaurants as well as lovely walks along the River Conwy. If you have the odd rainy day, divert the kids into the indoor swimming pool, and when the weather behaves, let toddlers have a play on the climbing frames at Gwydyr Park Play Area. Llanrwst is also gateway to outdoorsy adventures in Snowdonia National Park (five minutes). Adrenaline-seekers can zip down steep hillsides on toboggans or leap through the treetops at Zip World Fforest, while Adventure Parc Snowdonia (both 10 minutes) is the place for surfers to catch waves as zipwire fiends whizz down lines right above them. If you prefer to stay very firmly on the ground, Betws-y-Coed (10 minutes) is hiking and biking central, with scores of walks leading up into the hills, like the trail up to Hafna Lead Mine (five minutes). At Pen-y-Pass (25 minutes) you can access the route up Mount Snowdon, or you can abandon the walking boots in favour of underground tours at the National Slate Museum (40 minutes).

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The size of the field was fabulous with a level ground and plenty of room. The hosts (men on the gate) were very friendly and helpful.

Disliked: The toilets and showers need updating and cleaning more regularly.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: The guys that welcome you are great, very helpful and friendly. Great that we could hire a fire pit but a bit expensive for the logs. Fire pits to rent were £10 plus another £10 for a handful of logs. The put was flat and plenty of distance between tents. The views were beautiful.

Disliked: The toilets are showers were not very clean, there were scribbled signs everywhere, on every door. The listing said it was next to the river, it was not, not even a short walk away. It was a drive to get there. It said that quiet time was from 10pm. Except on our first night there was music blaring out from somewhere until gone midnight.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Loads of choices of flat pitches. Fantastic views. The children had loads of room to play as tents are pitched on the outside of the rugby pitches. Only 5 minutes drive from Llanwrst so it was easy to get takeaways and there is a good sized Co-op supermarket. Great location for visiting Snowdonia.

Disliked: Limited toilet facilities. You may have to queue at times.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: -Flexibility of pitch size - we took two smaller tents and a windbreaker and didn’t need to worry about taking up an exact pitch size.
-Friendliness of staff.
- Location.
- Able to book last minute for bank holiday.
- Quietness of campsite from 10pm

Disliked: -No one asked us our name or checked our booking. People could have rung their friends and told them to come and camp for free as no one was checking any bookings.
Or if people had paid for 1 night, they could have easily stayed for 2/3 nights for free.
- Expensive camping for limited facilities. Why is it the same price for my 2yr old as a grown up?
- Rugby club facilities used so most of the toilets didn’t have locks on them and the showers were very open.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked: Another great stay with the popcorn family, Vinny and Scott were warm and welcoming, nothing was to much. Nice level pitches and even though it was a bank holiday weekend there was plenty of room and no overcrowding, the scenery was beautiful with plenty of walking trails, will definitely visit again next year

Disliked: Only a small gripe but there were not enough toilets, showers or washing facilities for the volume of campers so they did get dirty very quickly but this did not deter us at all.
